A young woman in a small Colorado town finds herself on the opposing side to the mostly senior citizenry who want a marijuana dispensary now that pot has been legalized.
SYNOPSIS:
Denise Robins, 26, is a grocery store clerk and novice sustainable gardener in a small town in Colorado. In 2014, Denise barely notices the passing of the state marijuana laws. Even her town seems unaffected, other than a few colorful campers celebrating around the mountaineer memorial statue. This is not a surprise to her considering the majority of the town’s population is senior citizens.
A few months later however, Denise starts to notice things aren’t quite the same.In the sleepy town of Mt. Herald, the citizens have started acting differently. The local bakery shop now has an “adults only” section, the “elders” are friskier than the teens, and the town curmudgeon is waving to passersby and making funny faces at babies. Denise is even put in charge of a special display at the market called “Smoker’s Choice” – a selection of treats and snacks for those who her boss says are “enjoying the freedoms of the great state of Colorado.”
At times it seems like Denise and Tobey Crenshaw, the 30-year-old new addition to the town’s police department, are the only ones not “enjoying the freedoms.”Mostly, this makes for some amusing people watching. But in some cases, it makes Officer Crenshaw’s job a lot harder. When things people rely on start to fall apart, Denise is faced with the challenge of bringing equilibrium back into her life and the town of Mt. Herald.
“Is it possible to have a town-wide intervention?” she asks Tobey, after the Pastor of the local church misses Sunday morning services and is found in his basement on his 60th hour of playing video games.
“We have to do something, “ agrees Nico, the owner of the local pizza place.“I can’t keep going like this. They call me on my cellphone at 4 AM!
First, Denise and some other concerned young people try to get the citizens to create “healthy boundaries”, which only works for a day or two.Their next attempt is a town meeting to discuss the health concerns related to marijuana consumption. But to the group’s dismay, it appears the benefits to the health of the town are greater than any issues they can come up with.
In a moment of concession, Denise decides “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” and smokes some of Ms. Henderson’s, now infamous, local sativa strain. After about 20 minutes, Denise realizes that, although she is more relaxed, she is nowhere near as buzzed as the townsfolk have been acting. She realizes that the new “joie de vivre” being exhibited by the people of Mt. Herald has little to do with the pot and a lot to do with a sense of lost inhibitions and the opportunity to live their lives in a way they truly enjoy.
When the town comes together to help one of their own, who has gotten caught up in a struggle with addiction, even Tobey can’t find a reason to condemn their actions anymore. In the end, the citizens of Mt. Herald are forever changed, including Denise and Tobey.
