On opening day of hunting season, an escaped convict returns to his backwoods home vowing to kill his mother-in-law.
SYNOPSIS:
November 1, 1968.
United States Selective Service Office, Portland, Oregon. College dropout Alex Bergman has been called in for his draft physical. He shows up high on LSD, but passes the test. Now he’s heading to his backwoods home in southern Oregon to ask his draft board for Conscientious Objector status. If that doesn’t work, he swears he'll run away to Canada.
Oregon State Penitentiary, the same day. Rusty Cray is serving time for “assault involving a billiard ball”. His wife and mother-in-law turned him in. In the joint, Rusty got job-trained as a butcher. Today, he breaks out through the prison kitchen, hiding in the raw sides of beef hanging in a delivery truck. If he makes it home, he swears he’ll kill Brenda and her mother.
November 2, 1968. Lakeview, Oregon. Alex and Rusty arrive home on the opening day of hunting season. Both are on a collision course with murder, but only was born to be "dog dirty mean." Soon, Rusty will become one of the county’s most notorious killers, shooting Dora in the face and using Alex to track down Brenda. And soon, on the cold shores of a high mountain lake, Alex the self-proclaimed pacifist will discover the true meaning of courage.
