The comedic tale of a melodramatic substitute teacher who, after an unsuccessful decade trying to prove her chops on Broadway, attempts to create a reality television show about her life to prove she’s happy being single and thirty.
SYNOPSIS:
Amy McNabb is melodramatic, transparent, and 30. After almost a decade of trying to hack it as an actress on Broadway, she moves home to Philadelphia, broke, unemployed, and deflated. She begrudgingly takes a job substitute teaching and applies to graduate school, afraid it might be time to grow up, get practical, and get a “real job.” But, when she has to attend both a bridal and a baby shower in the same day – and is forced to endure multiple conversations along the lines of, “Some day your prince will come” – she finally snaps. In a fit of frustration, she determines to create a reality television show about her life in order to prove to world she has one – and prove to herself she has what it takes to be a professional entertainer. She hires a high school film student to help her create her masterpiece whose awkward demeanor directly contrasts her larger-than-life personality. What follows is a series of staged monologues, unintended embarrassing situations, and some surprising moments of total transparency – all caught on film. The seemingly mismatched pair not only put together a product they’re proud of, but also help each other along the way. In the course of creating her opus, Amy is constantly discouraged by the well-intentioned, practical advice she receives from her family and good friend, Evan. Her younger brother’s impending wedding also serves as a reminder that everyone else seems to have it all together. Thankfully, she has her best-friend-for-life, Claire, who is an artist and a dreamer just like Amy – albeit a wry one. Once completed, Amy’s great plan for discovery and eventual stardom is to give her opus to a friend who knows a guy…who knows a girl…who’s dating a guy at a popular cable station. But when her connection falls through, the fear of more rejection proves paralyzing. Unsure what to do next, the fate of her show – and her life – hang in the balance…until she gets what just might be her last, best shot. America, I Have a Life is a comedic never-say-die-give-it-your-all-one-last-time tale for anyone who has ever dreamed an impossible dream. Featuring an endearing heroine with a penchant for personal bloopers, America, I Have a Life is “Bridgette Jones” meets “I Love Lucy” with a candid camera twist.
