How do Short film producers make profit ?

I approached a producer and narrated my short film screenplay, at the end he asked me a question

"And what will be the return on my investment"

Nothing ran to my mind at that moment so I said "I'll get back to you on that, please give me few days time"

What are the possibilities for a short film producer to make profit.

Phil Bridge

Hi Surya Devan . Great question, thanks so much for asking. I'd quite like more info on this topic too. Expanding the knowledge base is always a good thing!

Hello Phil Bridge. I agree.

Kiril Maksimoski

They sell it as any merchandise....here's an example:

It is very rare for a short to make money itself but it can serve as a proof of concept for something else. The Saw franchise started with a short film and Neill Bloomkamp's short Alive In Joburg became a proof of concept for District 9.

Dont spend what you cant lose. Dont worry about profit, just be sure you can apply for jobs using the short as a sample.
