WAITING IN THE WINGS/ Comedy Adventure/ Synopsis/ Screenplay by Nanette Fenton

Malachi Mason is an unassuming virtuoso violinist, and a typical seventeen year old boy who hasn’t yet made up his mind what he wants to do when he graduates high school. Torn between his mother who wants him to continue his music study, and his domineering father who wants him to go into the family business at Mason Construction Company, Malachi rebels against both ideas; he wants to be the one to decide his own destiny.

Despite being born and raised in New York City amidst the luxury that wealth and prestige afforded, Malachi appreciates the simple things in life; skateboarding, playing his violin, and his special relationship with his friends, the pigeons across the street from his high-rise town house near Central Park; a scenario that continuously drives his ex-Marine, wheelchair-stricken father crazy, and his ditzy socialite mother to his defense.

On his way to a violin lesson, Malachi takes his usual shortcut through Central Park, enjoying the challenge of skateboarding through the city, and playing his violin at the same time. During his visit to the park where he takes a few moments to feed the pigeons, Malachi is accosted by three teenage thugs who beat him up, steal his expensive designer sneakers, skateboard, and lucky charm necklace. Malachi is severely injured with a blow to the head rendering him unconscious despite the efforts of several pigeons who tried to come to Malachi’s rescue by pecking the thugs.

After a brief hospital stay, the doctor recommends that Malachi rest and recuperate from his concussion in a quiet place away from the city. Since Malachi’s father has business in Florida, he takes his wife and son to spend the summer months with him in this tropical paradise. On their drive out of the city in their custom limo van, Malachi notices two pigeons flying overhead. He opens the sunroof in the rear of the vehicle and sees one of the birds holding his lucky malachite charm in its beak, attached to the gold chain that he thought was stolen during his terrible ordeal in the park. The bird drops the charm through the sunroof and speaks to Malachi who is stunned by the unusual event. Did the birds really talk to him, or was his injury causing him to hallucinate?

During Malachi’s recuperation in Florida, he takes quiet walks exploring the beach, and plays his violin amidst an audience of seabirds along the shoreline. But the day he discovered the sign that read Sunshine Seabird Sanctuary, and ventured down the path, is the day that he realized he wasn’t a typical seventeen year old boy; the birds were talking and he knew exactly what they were saying!

Hiding his secret from his parents, and everyone he met, Malachi was told by the seabirds both inside and outside the sanctuary, of a sinister plot of eminent domain that was about to befall the sanctuary. Dr. Ringhy, the veterinarian who devoted his entire life to the injured seabirds in providing the only home they now had, was coming to an end. The greedy and corrupt Mayor Sandollar, and the rich and powerful town businessman, Rico Lope, were determined to replace the prime beachfront property with luxury condos.

Malachi befriends Veronica, a seventeen year-old vet assistant who volunteers at the sanctuary, and Scuba, a deaf mute who was a strong and tireless worker from the Island of Jamaica. Both were invaluable to Dr. Ringhy and the running of the sanctuary.

Unbeknownst to his parents who think he is relaxing and recuperating from his injuries, Malachi becomes totally involved with the daily running of the sanctuary, amazing everyone with his uncanny knowledge of just what the birds wanted and needed.

The seabirds insisted that Malachi was their "Messenger" sent to them to bridge the gap between the two different worlds to reveal to the citizens of Sunshine Cay who the true culprits were behind the town's sinister plot to destroy the sanctuary and build condos on the valuable Gulf of Mexico property.

Eventually, through the weaving of events that become too complicated to bear on his own, Malachi reveals to Veronica, and subsequently to Dr. Ringhy, his strange ability to communicate with the birds, how he found out about the city’s plot, and the unexpected enemies their investigation uncovered to their shocking surprise; Malachi and Veronica's fathers!

Throughout Malachi's and Veronica's adventurous quest to save the seabird sanctuary, many lessons are learned by all involved that transcends the human spirit, uniting both nature and man to work together for the higher good of all. Anyone with courage and determination, despite all odds, can achieve great things; even injured seabirds that spend their lives 'Waiting in the Wings'.
