A gender-inverted retelling of “Beauty & the Beast” set in a contemporary yet fantastical future.
SYNOPSIS:
Brian, a handsome twenty-something, is apathetically coasting through life while working at his mother Jean’s clothing store along with his sister Lucy. The store is often frequented by his two old high school friends and self-proclaimed “bros” Jack and Mike. Also, the store’s most loyal patron is Lucy’s best friend, the beautiful and glamorous but shallow and spiteful Angelica, who’s often flirtatious towards the mostly oblivious Brian. Whilst off on an errand with his mother, Brian is mugged and beaten in the middle of the night at the edge of the city; with Brian dying and no time to find help, He and Jean are found by Brooke, a young women born with a horrific disfigurement who lives in isolation, studying and practicing medicine in secret from her large mansion just off the edge of town. Jean agrees to let Brooke help, despite Brooke’s insistence that neither Jean nor anyone else enter her mansion.
Brooke nurses Brian back to health, revealing that her father was a doctor and her mother was a veterinarian. Her parents passed what they knew about medicine onto her. Her parents died in a car crash, and Brooke has lived in isolation ever since. Brooke devoted her life to studying and practicing medicine, so she can provide aid to any person or animal that she can. Brooke is also a devout Bahá’í, and she teaches the faith to the formerly agnostic Brian. After Brian is restored to full health, Brooke gives him a dove she named Maggie. Brooke found Maggie as a baby, injured, on the roof of her house. Brooke nursed and cared for Maggie, and now she want Brian to give her a new home. Brooke inspires Brian to seek out a greater meaning in his life, and Brian in turn makes Brooke overcome her self-loathing and social isolation. After promising to return someday, Brian leaves Brooke and returns home.
After returning home, Brian gradually realized that he’s falling in love with Brooke, much to the dismay of Angelica, Jack and Mike. After hearing Brian’s story, Angelica, Lucy, Jack and Mike decide to break into Brooke’s house to steal her inheritance along with her medical supplies and drugs. Jack and Mike lock Brian in his room while Angelica and Lucy release Maggie and follow her back to Brooke’s house. Brian manages to break free and pursues.
Angelica attacks and gravely injures Brooke. But while Angelica and Lucy attempt to steal Brooke money and supplies, a shelf of various in-progress medicines falls onto Angelica, horribly disfiguring her face into a form not dissimilar from Brooke, before killing her. Brain arrives and nurses Brooke back to health with her instruction. In the end, whenever Brian looks at Brooke, he no longer sees her disfigurement, and instead perceives her as blindingly beautiful.
