About George

George M. Johnson is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright. His screenplay The
Wonder was a Finalist in the British Independent Film Festival Competition and in the Script
Doctor Contest of Contest Winners Competition in L.A.. His screenplay Peace Pledge won the
Wildsound Screenplay Competition, received Honorable Mention in the Euroscript Screenplay
Competition and the New Renaissance Film Festival (London), and was an Official Finalist in
the Cannes Screenplay Contest. His screenplay Painter in the Storm was recently a Semi-Finalist
in the International Screenwriters' Association Emerging Screenwriters Competition, and his
screenplay Boomerangst was recently a Semi-Finalist in the Page Turner Screenplay
Competition. His play Mockus was successfully produced to sold-out audiences by Chimera
Theatre in Kamloops in February of 2017, and Jupiter Theatre in Calgary will be producing it
post-pandemic. It was a second-rounder in the 2019 Austin Film Festival Playwriting
Competition. His comedy Still Life With Nudes has won several awards, including
the Ottawa Little Theatre’s Gladys Cameron Watt Award and the Regina Little Theatre’s
National Playwriting Competition. It was performed in Regina and Texas
and published in Ryga: A Journal of Provocations and in the U.S.A. by ArtAge Senior Resource
Center. His most recent book is Mourning and Mysticism in First World War Literature:
Grappling With Ghosts (Palgrave, UK). His picture book How Hope Became An Activist (Dixi,
UK) has just been published and another, Marisa and the Mountains will be published in
February (Simply Read). In 2019 he received the Y.M.C.A. Peace Medal for his social justice
work and writing. Johnson is a Professor of Screenwriting and Chair of English at Thompson
Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia, where he teaches creative writing and
literature. He and his wife have two children.
