ARTANIA
By Laurie Woodward

GENRE: Fantasy, Family
LOGLINE:

When two eleven-year-old boys are thrust into a world where all art is alive, they discover that their artistic gifts are superpowers that protect this magical realm from destruction.

SYNOPSIS:

We open on a desolate desert in a surreal world. Slithering paper cobras. 3-D hieroglyphic soldiers. Pyramids in the distance.

As the heroic Pharaoh Ramses fights valiantly against the Shadow Swine—nightmarish creatures intent on stealing the light of creativity—he is swallowed by a chasm, leaving Artania in dire peril.

On Earth, we meet Alex Devinci, a gifted young artist grappling with the challenges of life, including his mother's chronic illness and a school that has abandoned its art program. His world collides with Bartholomew Borax III, a quirky boy from a wealthy, germophobic family, who secretly crafts art in a hidden underground studio.

As they bond over their shared love of creativity, the boys discover that their art possesses a unique power: when they sleep, their creations become the Knights of Painted Light—valiant protectors that fend off the hunchbacked Shadow Swine as they invade human dreams. The more humanity turns away from art, the stronger the Shadow Swine become, threatening to plunge Artania into darkness.

When Alex's mother suffers a heart attack after foregoing buying medicine to get him a paint set, the guilt-wracked boy is pulled into Artania with Bartholomew, where they learn they are the prophesied heroes destined to save the realm from the orc-like Shadow Swine.

Here, their artistic powers reach light speed; every brushstroke coming to life instantaneously, allowing them to rally against the encroaching monsters. Embarking on a thrilling quest to create a magical scroll that can save Ramses and restore harmony in both worlds, the boys unleash the full potential of their creativity.

They face daunting challenges, yet their determination shines as they realize that their art is a superpower in both realms—offering hope and protection to those who believe.

In a climactic showdown, Alex devises a clever plan to use his art to unleash a brilliant wave of creativity that banishes the Shadow Swine, saving Ramses and restoring light to Artania.

Returning home, the boys find their lives transformed: Cyndi’s health is improved allowing Alex to finally forgive himself while Bartholomew embraces the freedom of artistic expression. However, the threat of the Shadow Swine lingers, hinting that their adventures have only just begun.
