Caught in the middle of an assassination plot, a student must walk the line between an exacting inspector and a seductive anarchist in this adaptation of Joseph Conrad's 1911 masterpiece.
SYNOPSIS:
Under Western Eyes is a near-future spy thriller that begins with the assassination of a government minister and plays out trying to solve who the double agent is from a host of possible suspects. The assassin Haldin shows up at Raz's apartment looking for help. Raz has a choice, does he help his friend or serve his country? Unfortunately haldin is captured and Raz finds himself being interrogated by the Inspector. Raz begins an affair with the anarchist Sophia, who leads the local insurgency against the government, after she gives Raz a mission to carry on Haldin's work to disrupt the government.
Unexpectedly, Haldin's sister Natalie turns up looking for answers about her brothers capture and subsequent death. Raz falls in love with Natalie and keeps his relationship secret from Sophia. It's only when Natalie tells Razumov that Sophia has contacted her and wishes for her to join the 'cause' to overthrow the government that Raz is faced once more with an impossible decision.
His love for Natalie paramount, Raz begs Natalie not to meet with Sophia, but she refuses. With only moments to spare, Raz confesses to Natalie that he is the one who told the police where her brother was and that he has been working with the inspector all along to capture Sophia. If Natalie goes to the meeting, she will be caught as well.
"To give one's life for the cause is nothing. But to have one's illusions destroyed, that is more than one can bear." - Razumov in Joseph Conrad's Under Western Eyes
