MORAL INJURY

EXT. ALLEYWAY- CONT.

Ludvik hands Joel a Croatian cigarette but he refuses.

Joel sits down near a dumpster, full of nausea and confusion. Ludvik remains standing.

LUDVIK

You have looked better Jacob.

Joel tenses. It is a name he hasn't gone by in a while.

LUDVIK (CONT'D)

I'm starting to forgive you for taking off.

JOEL

Things got a little tense.

LUDVIK

I suppose so. Even when you're a bodyguard, ours is not an easy business to have a hand in or I guess in our case now, businesses.

JOEL

So you made the merger with Lilliana?

LUDVIK

I know you think she's a bitch but my family doesn't know anything about companionship and she doesn't know the first thing about heroin. We need each other.

JOEL

I'm just a bodyguard. I don't have an opinion.

LUDVIK

Come now. Just because I give you a paycheck doesn't mean we aren't friends.

Joel goes silent for a second.

JOEL

Why are you in New York?

Ludvik smiles and says nothing. He helps Joel up and motions for a taxi.

One immediately stops. Upon entering, Ludvik mumbles something in another language as if he knows the driver.

LUDVIK

Jacob, did I ever tell you how Lilliana and I got to be acquainted in the first place?

Joel shakes his head no.

LUDVIK (CONT'D)

You're about to find out.

The taxi drives off into the eerie New York landscape.
