WINDSOR SMITHFIELD is a cantankerous, sloppy seventy-five-year-old African American used car salesman who is in the hospital for lung cancer treatment. He is joined by in the same room by seventy-two-year-old Japanese American MARION QUINBY, who is being treated for a blood cancer. Windsor begins to torture Marion by attacking Marion’s obsessive neatness. They go into a “Hu’s your oncologist” routine.

Windsor’s grandson, Samuel, and Marion’s grandson, Bryan, who are the exact opposites of their grandfathers, spy Nurse Ida Know and decide to compete for her hand.

Marion and Windsor talk about old girlfriends and discover they were involved with the same woman back in their twenties. Windsor learns that his treatment has not worked, and he needs to enter hospice, while Marion learns that his treatment has worked. Marion agrees to let Windsor stay with him. This lasts less than a day.

Windsor and Marion enlist their grandsons to find their lost love, ABIGAIL SUMNER. They find her address and race to the house. They arrive simultaneously. They talk to her and she seems to have some memory issues but remembers them both after much prodding. They leave agreeing that they will compete by helping the pother complete their bucket lists and the one who completes the most will be allowed to woe her again.

They first meet again at the gm and compete on the treadmill until Windsor falls off. The first list item, Windsor’s, occurs at the race track. It’s a muddy day, and they get into a big discussion about horses and Windsor gets some betting advice from a horse. Windsor wins ten thousand dollars. It’s Marion’s turn.

They go skydiving. Windsor gets caught on the sky dive machine and later tries to push Marion out of the plane, but his foot gets caught and they jump together.

They meet at a Baltimore Oriole versus New York Yankee ball game. Windsor bets on the Yankees. They get into a fight over a foul ball. Windsor takes it from a kid but ends up getting it autographed by all the Yankees and gives it to the kid.

They next go horseback riding. Both try to talk the stable hand into giving the other a mean horse. Windsor climbs on the horse and falls off into a pile of manure. Marion is kicked by the horse and lands in the same pile.

They next go to an amusement park. Windsor doesn’t last long as he pukes after riding it for the third time while Marion loves the ride. Windsor and Marion return to the hospital for more tests. They escape the hospital by climbing out a window.

The next event occurs at Watkins Glen International Speedway. They both ride around the track with a professional driver and then drive around it themselves. They are told no racing but begin to race and eventually crash and are escorted off the track.

The next event is a half marathon and of course race against each other. The next event is flying lessons. In the middle of the instructions the pilot collapses and Marion lands the plane. They are tied.

They go back to visit Abigail. She’s no longer there. Samuel and Ida talk about heredity and decide to take a DNA test. They like each other and a romance is budding. Ida goes to see her grandmother, Abigail in the nursing home section of the hospital. After getting court approval, the DNA test is conducted along with a test of Windsor’s who is back in the hospital. Bryan learns that Ida is his cousin.

Windsor and Marion separately learn that Abigail is in the nursing home. They both arrive simultaneously and fight to get into the room. They learn that she no longer remembers them and is on her deathbed.

Windsor gets worse. Abigail dies and Windsor is visited by her ghost. She tells him it’s always been him and he dies with a smile on his face.
