SYNOPSIS:

Daniel, our Narrator, observes young people over several years, and thinks humans should be more like caterpillars, who may not be very remarkable when young, but one day they will become beautiful butterflies.

In 1967, Dexter White is bullied because he is the only black student in a small southern town. After graduation, he is drafted and sent to Vietnam, where he finds himself in the same platoon as his greatest tormentor, Dave Jeffries. When their platoon is ambushed, Dave is shot. Will Dexter save him, or leave him behind?

In 1982, Dexter is a guidance counselor at a high school, where Bobby Barnes is a student. Bobby is the ultimate computer nerd, who is bullied and taunted for being a dreamer. Will he allow the bullies to crush his dream of a world where computers help us develop our dreams?

In 1995, Bobby releases a songwriting program. Alaina Mitchell is an overweight girl with an amazing voice, who dreams of writing songs that will change the world. Teased constantly about her weight, will she hide her talent from the world?

In a Los Angeles high school in 2008, Jess Matthews, JV football star, yearns to be a star on screen, a leading man. But when he meets Jordan Micheals, a flamboyant, openly gay teen who laughs and mocks the bullies who try to torment him, he begins to question his sexuality. After attending an Alaina Mitchell concert with Jordan, Jess and Jordan are attacked by the same bullies who had tried to taunt Jordan. Can a gay man be the lead in an action film?

in 2020, Oscar nominated actor Jess Matthews gives a speech at a small southern high school. Kate Mather is a talented artist, but is painfully shy. Misty Jones doesn't know what she wants to do with her life when she graduates high school, but being a teen mother was never part of the plan. One of them will be bullied to the point she takes her own life. The other decides to stand up to the bullies, and fight for what is right.

All of them are caterpillars. They just need to learn to fly.
