A debonair actor and a standoffish writer, searching for a story to save their TV show, stumble across an intriguing cold case that leads them deep into the criminal underworld.       

SYNOPSIS:

TV star Rex Baxter plays Eddie Finch, a hardboiled detective in the cop drama Deep Blue. When Rex learns that his show may be canceled, he partners with Kyla Graham, the show's newest writer, to find a new story. They visit Eric Bernard, a retired homicide detective who previously consulted on the show. Eric asks their opinion on an unsolved murder case that still haunts him. Rex and Kyla decide to take up the case and pose as documentary makers.

Rex and Kyla’s clumsy investigation attracts the attention of Wayne Wilder, a dangerous drug ring lieutenant. With a large shipment of cocaine approaching, Wayne kills the last witness who could link him to the murder. Eric receives a visit from Detective Malcolm Driver, who informs him that the case is still under investigation and advises him to call off Rex and Kyla.

Rex and Kyla push forward, discovering two pivotal clues. Rex unknowingly disrupts an undercover operation, angering the police monitoring Wayne's movements. Kyla pieces together the case but ends up in danger. Rex disguises himself as one of Wayne's couriers to find the money drop-off location. The police raid Wayne's car repair shop and uncover the identity of the big boss— Malcolm Driver. Rex tracks down Malcolm, who after a fight, escapes with Rex's replica pistol. Eric leads the police to an obscure junkyard where he believes Malcolm is hiding. The police kill Malcolm in a shootout.

Rex and Kyla leave the crime scene knowing they now have the episode to save Deep Blue.
