DARWIN RISING
By Richard Geiwitz

GENRE: Science Fiction
LOGLINE:

An anthropologist takes on the government to save a new humanoid race even though they carry viruses so deadly that all of humanity is at risk. But first, she has to learn to like people. “Planet of the Apes” meets “Arrival.”

SYNOPSIS:

A merchant marine vessel crosses the Pacific Ocean. They spot two people in the water. Pick them up. Can’t understand their language and turn them over to the U-S Navy, who takes them back to their base at Guam for a checkup and to see if they can get them back home.

The base doctor senses there’s something odd about him. She sends his blood work and DNA samples off for analysis.

The base’s Chief Officer, Trace, contacts Ellie, the anthropologist for help in getting them home. Ellie is also an ex-girlfriend he’s still in love with. Kind of uses this as an excuse to get together with her. She gets that, hesitates a little, but the situation is too interesting to ignore. Ellie is one of those people who loves humanity, but as a foster child, struggles to connect with people.

About that time, a hospital ship reports that the entire merchant marine crew died of a very deadly virus. So, they’re put into isolation. About that time, they start calling them Adam and Eve.

Then the DNA results come back. Adam and Eve are a whole new humanoid race. Ellie finds they have an incredible IQ. 200 plus. They also know a lot about the outside world based on trash that floated ashore on their island. They even learned English but didn’t know how to pronounce the words.

In Washington, politicians put out the phony story that the merchant marines died of a strain of Legionnaire’s Disease. But they actually are really nervous about CDC reports that say their virus is very deadly and has no cure. In other words, drop them into New York City, the whole population is dead in about a week.

The Department of Defense sends an agent to Guam. She helps Ellie, Trace, and the base doctor get Adam and Eve back home.

There, they find that, despite being an island full of Leonardo Da Vincis, they have a rather primitive life only because of limited raw materials.

Adam tells Ellie they would love to leave the island and join the world. It strikes home with Ellie who would like to connect with other people. Well, Trace has been working on her and she finally gives in to her feelings and falls in love with him.

The new humans figure out the team’s professional soft spots and lobby them, promising fantastic advancements in their fields if they can leave the island. That makes the team a little nervous. So, the agent and doctor think the new humans should be destroyed, but Ellie and Trace want them to live.

But there’s problem in Washington because a reporter is bearing down on the phony legionnaires’ disease story and the new humanoid story. Officials panic. Now, they have to make a quick decision between taking a chance on gaining those fantastic advancements by the brilliant new humanoids or eliminating them rather than taking such a huge chance on destroying all of humanity.

Ultimately, they order the navy to use the island for target practice, without, of course, telling the sailors it’s inhabited. But Ellie and Trace sneak a boat over ahead of time allowing the new humanoids to escape the bombardment.

As the new humans sail away, they chart a course for Hawaii.
