SORE LOSERS
By Kai Martin

GENRE: Sports, Comedy
LOGLINE:

When hyper-competitive baseball player Dickie Koslowski is permanently banned from the
Major Leagues, he dives into the shockingly cut-throat world of the Guinness Book of World Records.

SYNOPSIS:

Dickie Koslowski is a professional baseball player who is so competitive he has to place illegal bets on himself, which Major League Baseball finds out about, and bans him from the league for life.

This leaves a huge competitive void in Dickie's life, which he ends up trying to fill by diving into the surprisingly dark and cut world of the Guinness Book Of World Records, specifically by trying to get the world record for having the most Guinness world records. At first, it works out great – he's found a new competitive outlet, AND he's finally found something to bond with his precocious, young son Dickie Jr.

The problem is that the current “King of the Guiness Book”, local auto dealership mogul Arnold Cesario, defends his throne with an iron fist, and no matter how hard Dickie tries, he cannot beat him. Dickie teams up with a mysterious door-to-door cutlery salesman to get revenge on Arnold, but this only sends Dickie deeper and deeper into this hyper-competitive spiral that ultimately alienates him from his family – he breaks his son's heart and his practical wife Babs finally kicks him out of the house.

With nowhere else to go, Dickie is taken in by their pastor Father Virgil, who offers him a chance to rehabilitate himself and get back into the good graces of his family – Dickie must learn how to become a gracious loser and realize that winning isn't the most important thing in life, so he can set a good example for his son. Dickie agrees to follow Virgil's strange exposure therapy program, where Virgil puts him through a gauntlet of different games and competitions in which Dickie must endure losing over and over again.

After many trials and tribulations, Dickie becomes a gracious loser, but there is one final test – playing for the church softball team with Dickie Jr. in the league championship game against a team led by his nemesis Arnold Cesario, in front of Babs and the entire congregation.

Afraid he'll fall back to bad habits in the heat of competition and embarrass himself in front of his family, Dickie wants to quit and find another way to get back with them. Secretly desperate to win himself and that helping Dickie was just a means to such an end, Virgil picks Dickie up by the collar and threatens him with what a bad example it'll set for Dickie Jr. and what a loser Babs will think he is, if Dickie decides to quit now. Shaken, Dickie pulls himself together and agrees to play.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, it's a tie game with two out and two runners on, and Dickie Jr. is up. Knowing Dickie Jr. is one of the easiest outs on their team, Virgil orders Dickie to pinch hit so they can win the game. Dickie refuses, citing that it's moments like these, win or lose, that make competition exciting and he will not deny his son this opportunity.

Dickie Jr. steps up to the plate and surprises everyone by smashing what could be the winning hit, but lines out straight to the pitcher. They lose the game, but Dickie Jr. is overjoyed that he finally made solid contact with the ball. For the first time, Dickie is proud of his son, but more importantly, for the first time, Dickie Jr. is proud of his dad. They bond over the joy of doing, which softens Babs, and they all go out for ice cream. Weeks later Dickie is allowed to come over for family dinner – a first hopeful step in reconciliation.
