A high school swimmer needs to overcome his obsession with sex (or lack of it) in order to succeed personally and athletically.  With the help of his friends and a psychiatrist, he tries to find his sexual identity on his journey to winning a swimming scholarship at an upper crust school.    

SYNOPSIS:

CONNOR CAVANAUGH, a shy high school senior, was the top swimmer in the region in 1986. An exemplary student, Connor had multiple scholarships looming in his future. But a big problem has sprung up. A problem so rare, it only affects male teenagers.

Perched on the sidelines, CONNOR CAVANAUGH, a shy high school senior, watches the girl swim team competing in the final swim meet of the regular 1987 season.

He becomes fixated on CYNTHIA CRAIN almost exposing herself as she releases the pressure of the elastic that clamps around her thigh. She catches him gawking and drags him to an isolated area. Instead of chastising him, she seduces him. As he is about to explode, the starting gun fires, jolting him from another one of his multiple daily daydreams.

At the swim meet, Connor competes in the individual medley against their rival school. Connor’s competition draws Connor’s attention to the sexy cheerleaders. Losing focus, Connor is late on the dive and ends up losing the event.

After practice, COACH RAMROD lambasts the Swim Team for such a poor performance. Even though they already qualified for the finals, the loss was an embarrassment. He singles out Connor’s dismal performance. Coach informs the team that a Cambridge University scout will attend the finals next week. Concerned about Connor’s continuing lack of concentration, Coach warns that Connor needs to get his act together or kiss any chance of a scholarship goodbye.

Making matters less tolerable, in the locker room, Connor gets harassed by DAVID DENTON. Fondly known as CHOMPER, the football team’s defensive lineman got the nickname because he ‘chomps’ through the offensive line to sack the quarterback. Chomper seems to get great joy from bullying Connor.

That night, at dinner, Connor’s mother BARBARA, worried about Connor’s melancholy mood, tries to comfort him by blowing it off as Connor having a bad day. Connor’s twelve-year-old brother JON adds that Connor’s had a bad season.

Jon, a thorn in Connor’s side, constantly complains about sharing the room with his brother.

Connor announces that he may not get a scholarship. His father, ROBERT, asks why he won’t get a scholarship. Jon quickly volunteers “because he sucks”. When Connor tells Jon to “suck this”, Robert smacks him on the back of the head.

Working as a bagger at the local grocery store, Connor is embarrassed by his mother who tells the checker stories about Connor’s youth. Moving on, Connor runs into TYRESE JOHNSON, the first and only black student at Saint Francis High School. Tyrese announces that his mother is out of town, so he’s having a party on Saturday night - “Free beer”. Barbara witnesses the whispering which seems a little intimate to her.

At the booze and pot fest, Connor’s best friend FLIP FOWLER encourages Connor to get up the nerve to ask Cynthia to dance. Connor’s attempt is sidelined by a public mocking from Chomper. Embarrassed in front of his dream girl, Connor throws wine at Chomper. Chomper chases Connor, forcing him to hide in the bathroom. While hiding in the bathroom, Connor witnesses a couple having at it in the bedroom. Connor’s souvenir of the event is possession of the girl’s panties.

The next day, Tyrese goes to Connor’s house to take him to the gym. In discussing skateboards, they stand face to face comparing theirs. Barbara, in the hallway, hears talk that sounds a little suggestive of boys “experimenting”. Peeking in, she sees them “comparing”. A very religious lady, she becomes very concerned and walks off in disgust.

The next day at lunch, Connor is cornered by Chomper looking for revenge from the party. When interrupted by a faculty member, he tells Connor to meet him after school. Threatening that Connor better be there.

Jon discovers the panties hiding in Connor’s nightstand and tries them on. Mrs. Cavanaugh walks in on Jon’s who tried them on. When she finds out they belong to Connor, she wants to stop Connor’s sexual proclivities, prompting a visit for him to a psychiatrist.

Connor makes it very clear to DR. WHEELER that he’s forced to come to therapy, but it’ll be a waste of time. He’s “just horny”.

Moping at Flip’s house, Connor moans about his virginity. Flip assures him that it is because of his self-fear and that he needs to stop being a wuss. Flip suggests a double date to the Drive-in theater and that Connor invite Cynthia.

At Archie's arcade, where Cynthia works, Connor gets the guts to talk to her. She teaches him how to play pool. Standing behind him, Cynthia shows him how to hold the cue stick and slide it in and out of his fingers. “in… and out…. In… and out”. Her warm breath makes the hair on the back of his neck stand up. She then rips his clothes off and gives him oral sex. Oops. Another fantasy

To help his pathetic friend, Flip sets up a “sure thing” for Connor. All Connor needs to do is follow Flip’s lead and do everything he does.

The “sure thing” is LORRAINE. While Flip strikes out with his prudish date, MARILYN, Connor’s “sure thing”, is anxious to get it on. When Marilyn walks out on Flip, he pursues her leaving the other couple alone in the car. Connor discovers that the condom hidden in his wallet is missing, so he goes to the bathroom to buy one.

His simple purchase turns into a series of encounters with adults from his church; including Father Damian, who “expects to see him in confession on Friday”.

When Connor finally returns to the car with a condom, he is disheartened to find Flip and Lorraine having sex.

Dr. Wheeler asks if Connor told Flip he felt betrayed. Connor says Flip knew that he needed to get laid so he could concentrate on swimming and get a scholarship.

Connor avoids Flip, who continually apologizes.

Connor starts hanging out with Tyrese. Alone in Connor’s bedroom, Tyrese tells a story about the first time he had sex. When Connor’s horniness becomes evident, Tyrese presents Connor with a sex toy – “Betty B.J.”.

Nervous to go first, Connor agrees to sloppy seconds. When the machine malfunctions and gets stuck on Tyrese, Connor is forced to help get it “unstuck”. While trying to yank it off of Tyrese, they crash into the shower, with conditioner exploding and covering them. While in a “compromised position”, Jon walks in on them.

Connor tries to negotiate with Jon to keep his mouth shut. Jon refuses to negotiate while Connor has “man-juice” on his face.

Connor tells Dr. Wheeler he is ashamed of what he did and wonders if he is a homosexual.

While practicing at the school pool, Flip ambushes Connor and takes his clothes until he agrees to talk to him. Flip apologizes for breaking the “bro code”. As an olive branch, Flip sets up a date between Connor and Cynthia.

Arriving home to get ready for the big date, Connor is confronted by his mother about molesting his brother. Unsure of what she is talking about, he attacks Jon. Jon says that she flipped out when she found a used condom(the one Jon stole from Connor’s wallet) in Jon’s bed. Jon told her Connor made him wear it while Connor diddled him. Jon figured they would understand since they already think that Connor is a pervert.

Connor moans the story to Dr. Wheeler. In going through it with the Doc, Connor realizes that Jon's plan was to get his own bedroom.

On the day of the big meet, Connor has trouble concentrating on the event. Flip reminds him of the drive that Connor used to have that made him the best swimmer in the league. And if he wants to win, he needs to make it a priority. Ironically, the same thing Dr. Wheeler told him.

At the final match, Connor loses his focus, gets a late start, and loses the race. He sees the scout from Cambridge leave. Then, it is announced that his opponent may have jumped the gun and they must have a rematch.

Connor wins the race easily but is disheartened that the scout didn’t see it.

When harassed by Chomper in the locker room, Connor stands up to him and knees him in the groin. When chased outside, Connor pulls the towel wrapped around Chomper's waist, exposing him.. Connor escapes amid the laughing student body.

Connor goes to the arcade to apologize to Cynthia for standing her up. When he goes to the bathroom, he is confronted by Chomper and his goonies. A brawl ensues. When Cynthia tries to break it up, Chomper pushes her out. Connor defends her by using his skateboard on Chomper’s face, breaking his nose. Chomper then beats Connor senseless.

While trying to help Connor, Cynthia admits she’s been waiting for him to ask her out. They have a wonderful intimate moment.

Connor updates Dr. Wheeler admitting that the doctor knows his stuff. Connor tells him that Jon got his own bedroom and is confined to it for three months. And Connor got even. He planted the defective sex toy in his top drawer so Jon would find it.
