A destitute Elvis impersonator embarks on a road trip with a murder suspect masquerading as a nun in hopes of winning an Elvis impersonation contest.
SYNOPSIS:
BUBBA (35) is a down-on-his-luck goofball who tries to emulate the style of Elvis Presley but refuses to sing or dance like the King. His only friend in the world is a pudgy fellow known as THE STATUE (35), a street performer who poses for pictures in the guise of Lady Liberty herself. When not panhandling, Bubba and the Statue volunteer at a convent, trading chores for food. The “Missionaries of Charity” have just accepted a beautiful, sophisticated new recruit, SISTER MARY (32), who’s a socialite on the run — she is the prime suspect in the murder of her millionaire husband THE PICKLE KING. But she didn’t do it! Bubba receives an invitation for an upcoming contest in Memphis, TN — the best Elvis impersonator will win $10 grand! A DETECTIVE shows up at the convent looking for Sister Mary and Bubba decides to go to the contest. Hijacking a bakery truck to flee the Detective, Sister Mary runs into Bubba and the Statue trying to hitch a ride to Memphis. Traveling through Dutch Pennsylvania, the trio run low on gas in an Amish community. The Statue’s act nets enough spare change to hit a diner, and he heads off to do a private party for drag queens to raise the rest of the gas money. Waiting at the diner, Bubba and Sister Mary, notice the arrival of the Detective, hot on her trail. They flee on foot and take refuge with an Amish family. They are asked to milk a cow to pay their way in chores, and this team-up goes badly. Sister Mary spots two bicycles and they pedal off in the direction of Philadelphia. It’s an arduous journey and their adversarial wit keeps them sparring the whole way, but finally, dirty and hungry, the pair arrive in Philly. Sister Mary retrieves what she needs from her former sister-in-law’s apartment — it’s security camera footage that proves who really killed the Pickle King! To celebrate, they visit a sushi restaurant. It’s owned by the man who’s in trouble with the mobsters and mistaking Bubba for the gangster, he gives them a briefcase of money and drugs. Both the Detective and the mobsters are following their path, step by step… The Detective wants Sister Mary and the mobsters want their money. Finally Bubba and Sister Mary make for Memphis, where they are just in time for the Elvis contest. Things are looking bleak when the Detective arrests Sister Mary and the thugs confront Bubba backstage. But Bubba has cut a deal with the Detective. Just when it looks like the bad guys are going to drown Bubba in a toilet bowl, cops arrest them. Bubba was wearing a wire! The Detective ends up with a big win — proof of the bad guys’ dealings, and the tape proving who really killed Sister Mary’s husband. Bubba doesn’t win the Elvis contest – it turns out he didn’t want to perform because he’s a terrible singer — but he does get the girl and regain his family’s respect. The Rock recovers from his stroke and reinstates Bubba at Rocca Records, where his love of rock ‘n’ roll will go to good use.
