I'm excited to announce that we are currently in pre-production for our next film, and it's very special to me. The short film is titled "An Immigrant Story," and it's an extremely urgent and timely story that follows Daniel, a gay Jamaican immigrant who is at risk of being deported after a physical altercation at his job gets him fired. His only viable option for a green card is through his estranged father, who will only sponsor him if he denounces his sexuality, leaving Dane to make a heartbreaking choice.
This story is inspired by true events that happened to my brother, a homosexual immigrant who was forced to leave the states once his visa expired and with no avenues left had to return to our hometown of Kingston, Jamaica, which is still a violently homophobic city. As a native Jamaican and mixed-race immigrant, I really feel it's important to tell the stories of marginalized people in my country through my medium, film. I have personally experienced the fragility of immigration, and understand the sensibilities required and the nuances necessary to highlight the many issues facing immigrants in this country today. With immigration status so fragile and dependent on circumstances that can change at the drop of a hat, many immigrants find themselves desperate, just as Daniel does in this story.
Another reason that this story is so crucial is that as social norms expand and progress in our country, we often forget that other countries are still plagued with issues such as homophobia. Such is the case in Jamaica, and due to his brother's experience as a gay man in Jamaica who regularly faces threats of violence and needs to keep his sexuality hidden, Scott is passionate about educating others about the issues at hand, and finding ways to collectively work towards a more accepting, loving and safe world overall.
If you wish to contribute in any way to bringing this film to life, I will be extremely grateful. We're primarily raising money to fairly pay our actors, and pay for festival submissions to spread this message far and wide.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
