A sleep-deprived, drug-addled long-haul trucker must reckon with the past when he becomes convinced he has found his kidnapped son, who was long presumed dead. He makes a series of dangerous decisions that upend his family and test his morality.

SYNOPSIS:

1977. Del Brauer is a "wildcatter," a long-haul trucker who works independently. He never knows where he'll be going next. As a result, he is away from his wife Pat for long stretches. When Del's wife Pat gives birth to their first child Travis, he tries to spend more time at home. He gets a job with a trucking company that offers shorter hours and planned routes, but feels caged in, yearning for the freedom of his old life. Soon the money runs out and Del returns to his old ways, but he is sidelined by an accident that wrecks his truck and leaves him housebound. Del becomes anxious, edgy. He stops sleeping. Develops an addiction to Benzedrine.

One afternoon an exhausted Del takes his son to the grocery story and the boy disappears. Evidence suggests a kidnapping. The police have no leads, and as time passes, the community forgets about Travis. But the tragedy pulls the Brauer family apart. Pat becomes withdrawn and wants nothing to do with Del. Left with few other options, Del goes back to wildcatting.

Years pass. Del finds himself in some forgettable diner in Alabama during a tropical storm. As he sits drinking coffee and waiting out the weather he sees a suspicious looking man traveling with a boy who looks oddly familiar. What follows is a horrific series of events that will change the Brauer family's lives forever and leave a community reeling.
