Abena Diallo is an impoverished and uneducated teen from Africa who witnesses her father murdered by the corrupt government. Now a target herself, she flees to the U.S.to stay alive and make a name for herself.
She teaches herself English with help from a homeless ex-English teacher, Brad.
Abena lands in the harsh conditions of New York City, along with her pursuers. While hiding out in a homeless shelter she and Brad eventually fall in love and start a family.
Brad is killed at the hands of her pursuers.
Abena, now a renown Writer, is left with a fatherless baby and public recognition that could lead her killers to her doorstep. After she is entered into the most prestigious writing competition in the U.S., it is winning this competition that ironically saves her life.
