ANNE BONNY
By Mage Lanz

GENRE: Historical, Drama
LOGLINE:

Set in the golden age of piracy, a young woman trades her comfortable, but restricted life in the colonies for the freedom of the open seas, and becomes a hunted pirate.

SYNOPSIS:

This feature script chronicles the life of real-life pirate Anne Bonny, starting from when she meets sailor James Bonny in South Carolina, 1716. Facing a forced marriage, and desiring freedom to choose for herself, she marries for love. Her father disowns her, they flee to former pirate haven Nassau (now under British rule).

Unhappy with poverty and lack of agency in her new environment, and seeing James Bonny with new eyes, she falls for pirate captain Calico Jack Rackham, who teaches her how to fight and survive in this rowdy and reckless town.

Jack asks the Governor for a divorce on Anne's behalf, (as she's a woman and cannot possibly ask for divorce on her own), and the request is quite brutally denied. Anne looks for freedom in the one place it still exists in the world at that time - on a pirate ship.

She dresses as a man, and she, Jack, and a small crew steal a ship and embrace life on the run. She meets up with Mary, another hidden female pirate, and they embrace pirate life together, taking charge and taking ships, all while being hunted by the Governor's privateers.

Their luck finally runs out in 1720, after they take their biggest haul yet, a Spanish ship full of new world treasure. Cornered by the privateer in a night of celebration, Anne and Mary fight off their attackers the best they can, but are overcome. The story ends with the trial, and Anne's imprisonment, regretting nothing but getting caught.
