ANNE BONNY PILOT
By Mage Lanz

GENRE: Historical, Drama
LOGLINE:

Set in the golden age of piracy, a young woman trades her comfortable, but restricted life in the colonies for the freedom of the open seas, and becomes a hunted pirate.

SYNOPSIS:

The pilot spans from a brief flashback to her days as a "boy" in Cork, Ireland, and then skips ahead to her teenage years in Charles Town, South Carolina, in 1716. Having tasted the life of freedom and education from when her parents pretended she was a boy, she's unwilling to accept the limitations of becoming a woman. When faced with a forced marriage, she finds an escape by marrying sailor James Bonny. Her father disowns her, and they flee to former pirate haven Nassau (now under British rule).

Unhappy with poverty and lack of agency in her new environment, and seeing James Bonny with new eyes, she falls for pirate captain Calico Jack Rackham, who teaches her how to fight and survive in this rowdy and reckless town.

Jack asks the Governor for a divorce on Anne's behalf, (as she's a woman and cannot possibly ask for divorce on her own), and the request is quite brutally denied. Anne looks for freedom in the one place it still exists in the world at that time - on a pirate ship.

By the end of the pilot, she returns to live as a free "man", and she, Jack, and a small crew steal a ship and embrace life as fugitives.

Great concept Mage! Anne Bonny has been profiled in history documentaries and in the Starz program Black Sails, but a complete series on her would be enthralling.
