Gary Indiana might fit your needs pretty well. And it's only a few hours from you. There are still blocks and blocks of abandoned residential, commercial, and industrial areas in Gary. There are a lot of abandoned and near-abandoned areas in Ohio, Illinois and Michigan too. Some of the south suburbs of Chicago might fit your bill. East Chicago, too.

Some stock or custom footage might be in your future, too. Filmsupply.com is pretty impressive, and they have a whole list of filmmakers who do custom orders. Go to their website, and type in "abandoned town" and you'll see what their current stock is.

Side trivia note: the mega-successful Don't Breathe was set in Detroit, but was mostly filmed in Hungary. Mmm....homemade gulyas, porkolt and palasinta. I'm ready when you are! Heh-heh.

Bill - I would like rural. The best would be a ghost town but I would take anything just run down and abandon. I don't know if stock footage would work. I guess that would be last case scenario. I appreciate the help!

What a great question. I plan things in spurts, which keeps me motivated. For example if I get these 5 things done by a certain time, then I give myself a reward (ie. watch a show I've been wanting to watch or do something non-work related). Then, once I hit that goal, then I do another spurt with a reward, and eventually everything gets done.

I haven't made a film, but I did make a pilot of my old comedy group a while back. SCTV and SNL were my primary sources of inspiration. I am in the hopeful process of making a film later this year. No single film to name, but Werner Herzog and John Cassavetes are my primary sources of inspiration.

I had no intention of working in films, but when I was asked to interview Andy Cheng for a magazine, we became friends and about four years later he asked if I'd ever written a screenplay. I have always loved watching movies and so I had played around with turning some fiction I had written into scripts but I had not done it seriously. He gave me a script to re-write and liked what I did with it enough to tell me that he would love to have me as his writing partner. So far we have one film together, written for Johnny Martin (DELIRIUM) and Johnny has since hired me to write others that have yet to go into production. Andy and I are working on another that he will direct himself and already has a BAFTA winning actor signed on and partial funding before we've even finished the screenplay!

None. I enjoy the technical aspects of filmmaking. The only saving grace for some films is the extra material like "The making of...".

It is hard for me to pick just one film that got me interested. If I had to limit it down I could possible do one movie, one series, and one person. Charlie Chaplin would be my person. The movie series would be Halloween. Then the one movie might be Pulp Fiction. Three complete different time frames and genres. Now I would have to say who I am most inspired by is Jordan Peele. I love horror movies and he is creating a whole different perspective in that genre and I would love to help pave that road.

Hello, Ty. A nice DSLR should work just fine Nikon 7200 or Canon buy them used or reconditioned so that you can get a better deal. And don't forget the lenses. You should also consider purchasing a light kit within your budget. If all else fails, hire me to direct your film. =)

Hi Ty, there are so many affordable options, it just depends on what you are looking for. There is always a learning curve with any camera you buy. I guess it comes down to how much money you want to spend. And how much time do you want to invest in learning how to be a filmmaker? I can give you names of different cameras and options, but it comes down to what your needs are. If you have questions, message me and I might be able to help you out or at least point you in the right direction.

Youtube first five things every director should buy by YCImaging. The first thing he goes over are great cameras for under $1500. All of the ones he list are great, plus the video is 2.5 years old so the cameras are now a little cheaper. Or you can also find the newer models for a good price as well.
