In prehistoric Africa (340,000 BC), Ellie & her tribe of patriarchal Homo sapiens are experiencing food scarcity due to a cold-freeze. Ellie–often mocked for her constant singing, dancing, and storytelling–leaves her homeland with her friend Deni to pursue a life of freedom in the valley below: a place filled with lions, mammoths, and hostile prehuman species.
