SYNOPSIS:
When 10 year old Drew is the only survivor of a tragic accident, he is sent to live with his grandfather on the Island of Hawaii. An old bachelor, long set in his ways, the two have no idea how to get along, especially once Drew becomes obsessed with “prepping” as a way to deal with the loss of his family. Drew’s only friend is strange young girl named Josey whose dire predictions and fatalistic outlook mesh well with Drew’s and together they find an old bunker where they plan to live out the Apocalypse, which Josey is sure will happen on her birthday. As Drew follows the tips outlined in his new book “101 ways to Survive the End of the World” Grandpa becomes increasingly frustrated with his quirky behavior and forces Drew to go to school where he is bullied and miserable. With the help of Josey, Lana, (Grandpa’s unrequited love interest) and a dog named Dog, the old man starts to accept Drew for who he is. The two finally find something to bond over when Drew tries to learn self-defense and Grandpa is able to see the motivation behind Drew’s need to prepare for disaster. Just as a major tropical storm hits the island, Drew realizes that Josey is just a figment of his overworked imagination. He flees to the bunker where Grandpa finds him and together they ride out the storm. At the Annual Lantern Floating Ceremony in Honolulu, Drew finally says goodbye to all that he lost and turns to Grandpa as his new family.
