RAINBOWS AND SILVER BUCKLES SYNOPSIS.pdf
Three married couples and a single girl, take a vacation in 1993 to see an old friend who is living on an island, Lemesurier, in the Icy Strait of Alaska. The host, Johnny, is a rugged guide who has lived alone on the island for 25 years. The visitors are all in their late forties, except the single girl, Connie, who is in her late thirties. The only restriction during their visit is not to venture into the large mystical Rainforest
on the east side of the island without Johnny.
A special room contains artifacts from a former pioneer couple, Joe and Muz Ibach, who lived here in the early 20th century for over 40 years. One of the items that gains attention is an old mysterious
trunk. The room is named the Barrymore Extension after the famous actor John Barrymore and his wife
Dolores, who were frequent visitors to the island.
A lone guest, Butch, goes into the Barrymore room and opens the well worn trunk. It is full of old books, diaries, and photographs dating back to 1908 and ending in 1960. He becomes engrossed in the oldest diary and begins reading.
The story comes to life with a young prospector, Joe, rescuing a young Dance Hall Girl, Muz, who is fighting off a drunken miner in a saloon. He talks her into joining him on his farm in the Alaskan gulf and they fall in love and marry. Muz has a bad fall and they decide to move to another larger island closer to civilization. They think that the new island is uninhabited, but soon find a mysterious clan of Little
People living there.
They eventually find out that the island is Enchanted and no evil can remain there. The leader of the clan, Elder John, all of two and a half foot tall, and his people protect the island and reward those that do good with a Silver Buckle.
A series of adventures follow including a kidnap attempt by one of Joe's nephews which is thwarted by Muz and Elder John. A landing by a Japanese submarine in the 1940's and is driven off mysteriously by Elder John. The little people fulfill their prophecy of protecting the island against all wrongdoers, and help the pioneer couple find their quest at the end of a rainbow.
After 50 years of adventure and love, Muz passes away. They had made a promise that if one of them died the other would not be far behind. Joe, after a year, takes his own life and is buried next to Muz on their beautiful island.
In returning to the present, the visitors are taken into the forest and Connie is awarded a Silver Buckle for an act of kindness she performs in the forest. However the Little People are not actually seen.
Butch is skeptical and questions Johnny as to the legitimacy of the Little people, as Johnny is the only living person to have contact with them. Could the log books have been changed? Johnny has been there on the island alone a long time.
A figure of a man with red hair, hard to make out, is seen waving at the departing plane.
