Being the daughter of a Mexican immigrant and a career US veteran who served internationally and during two wars greatly influenced Kari's lens.
Optioning her ancestor's sinister story to ITV Studios empowered Kari to create gritty female lead roles. In contrast, she relishes adapting public domain material, stories long forgotten.
Kari sharpened her skills under Randall Jahnson's mentorship (The Doors). Her work is a testament to creating character-driven stories without settling into one genre, culture, or format while exploring themes of identity, trauma, abuse, and the unknown.
"Yolanda," previously titled "CRABS IN A MOTHER F*CKING BUCKET," is a Latine/Latinx, female-driven feature that has achieved significant success. It won at HollyShorts for Best Feature Screenplay and is a semifinalist in the 2024 Academy Nicholl Fellowship with Jacy Mairs of Ryko Films attached to direct.
Kari was recently invited onto the ISA's Development Slate of top-tier writers.
Kari’s work has dominated Coverfly’s top 1% since 2021 along with landing on Coverfly’s 2023 list of most viewed projects by industry members. In 2024, Yolanda was among the top ten of more than 155,000 Coverfly projects. Kari holds dozens of finalist awards across multiple projects.
