THAT TIME WE LIED TO THE KIDS

THAT TIME WE LIED TO THE KIDS
By Melinda L Hicks

GENRE: Comedy, Action
LOGLINE:

Stressed-out parents lie to their selfish, entitled grown children to get away to Europe scot-free but when the couple is mistaken for assassins by a mafia boss in hiding, their only hope…is their loser kids.

SYNOPSIS:

Eden and Ben Freeman have a monopoly on bad luck. Their home is falling apart, their finances are in the toilet, and their three grown kids cling to the nest like a flock of dodos. David dropped out of college and spends his days flying toy planes. Cale is a wannabe stunt man who’s afraid of heights. Lizzie is the peace, love, shrooms of the bunch, in a constant state of cloud surfing.

When the unlucky couple get a financial windfall from a risky investment, Eden convinces Ben to hide the money and take their dream trip to Italy, sans kids. But when the day comes to tell their children, a series of miscommunications and assumptions adds up to a big lie – that Ben has cancer and he and Eden are heading to a clinic in Switzerland for a month.

Conflicted about the way things went down, Eden and Ben arrive in Switzerland at the cancer clinic for a tour, then sneak off to plant Ben’s phone in the bushes so their location will ping at the clinic. What they don’t know is that Italy’s most notorious mafia boss is hiding out at the clinic while he gets treatment. La Voce (the Voice) is a brutal killer who rips people’s throats out while he sings opera.

La Voce’s goons spot Eden and Ben outside his room and mistake them for assassins. Now Eden and Ben are running for their lives. In the melee, Eden gets grazed in the ass by a bullet and accidentally dials Lizzie before losing her phone.

Back at home, the kids listen to Eden’s shocking voicemail. Suspicions arise when they can’t reach their parents, the clinic has no record of Ben, and they discover an enormous sum of money in Eden and Ben’s bank account. Off they go to Switzerland to find the truth.

At the clinic, the three meet Isabella, a beautiful but scar-faced Italian who is looking for her missing father. They board Isabella’s private helicopter to join her search, then discover her true motive – to murder La Voce and take her birthright as head of the family.

As Eden and Ben dodge the mafia goons, they think they’re in the clear when they hop on a tour bus - until it breaks down in the middle of nowhere. They spot an abandoned town and take off for a quick adventure, only to stumble upon La Voce’s hideout. Taken hostage, they wrestle with regret over their parenting choices as they plead for their lives and find surprising camaraderie with La Voce, a fellow parent with a troubled daughter who wants him dead.

But Isabella isn’t the only one gunning for La Voce – a consortium of mafia bosses has tracked Isabella and they’re flying fast to beat her there.

Four mafia bosses, three loser kids, two unlucky parents, and one brutal assassin high on a shroom gummy converge at an abandoned castle to fight for their lives and discover that even the most dysfunctional families are still family.
