Two childhood sweethearts; an alienated Pari-mutuels teller and a disenchanted horse trainer reunite as adults at the race course where they first met and uncover the plans to rob the establishment on its closing night, but in order to thwart the plot, they must rob it themselves.
Kelly Falen waited twenty three years to blow Chris Willet’s mind for the second time.
Leading a financially and emotionally depleted life, Chris’ inherited job at the dilapidated Flamingo Downs Race Course had all but worn out its welcome. With Kelly’s sudden intrusion into his humdrum routine, little did he know he was about to be jolted back to the childhood prank that would forever affect their lives. On that day, Chris played Zorro and pilfered over a hundred thousand dollars in two sacks from the money room where his granddad had worked. He dragged those bags right past her without ever realizing what he had really stolen was a little girl’s heart. And she’s loved him for over twenty years without ever really knowing him. Now, the time has come to have both.
Unfortunately, time is not on their side. The track’s owner has just announced that in five short days Flamingo Downs will close its doors to thoroughbred racing and begin its conversion to a multi-million dollar NASCAR facility. To many on both sides of the betting windows this comes as a crushing blow. To the respectable as well as the degenerates, horse racing is as much a way of life as it is an occupation to these people and now their world was being sold out from under them.
Benny Peckham is a degenerate’s degenerate. He’s the shady kind of con man that has forever tarnished the image of horse tracks. Grudgingly paired with a couple of old-school Mafiosos, some truly disingenuous plans for the three million in stakes race purses have been finagled for the closing night’s festivities. …but finagled by whom?
As Chris and Kelly discover there’s a lot to learn about each other, the one thing they’ve shared for over two decades could be the only thing capable of saving the day.
