SYNOPSIS:
Nelka, a studious but exhausted pre-med student in San Diego, is urged by her demanding academic advisor, Ms. Emerson, to take a six-week United Nations Relief Works Agency volunteer placement in Jordan, serving Palestinian Refugees.
While she lacks clinical credentials and fears her husband, Michael, is cheating on her with a woman named "Bunny," she accepts, hoping the experience will secure her a spot in medical school.
In Jordan, she works in refugee clinics and forms bonds with school friends Zoe and Gina. After her friends talk her into going out the night before Ramadan, Nelka takes a taxi alone to meet them at the club.
When her taxi drops her off three blocks too early, Nelka is forced to brave the streets alone in a little black dress, and a 500-man riot breaks out. Just before the mob overtakes her, a good Samaritan pulls her into a building, where the police figure out how to get her home safely.
Just as her police-commissioned taxi reaches her block, Hamas militants abduct her, taking her to Gaza, where they're experiencing a shortage of medical workers, even though she has no medical skills.
They imprison her in a brutal jail, where she's forced to pretend to be a doctor, working on patients until a deadly air strike hits the hospital. Among her fellow prisoners are Bushra, a Palestinian jailed for opposing Hamas, and Sofia, another American doctor kidnapped five years prior.
At home in San Diego, Nelka's husband, Michael, learns she's in trouble but chooses not to tell authorities, so he can get away with his affair, leaving Nelka's survival in her own hands.
Back in Gaza, Bushra helps Nelka plan an escape, giving her a map to the Egyptian tunnels. Bushra also tells Nelka to visit her brother, Yusha, who will help her get to the Israeli tunnels if her first plan to escape fails.
After having a catastrophic breakdown at the border, Sofia is killed by Egyptian soldiers, and Nelka is forced to flee the Egyptian tunnels and travel the streets of Gaza to Yusha's house alone.
With Yusha's help, Nelka reaches the tunnels to Israel, disguised in a Hamas uniform with a fake suicide vest. She darts through the front lines, navigates the tunnel, and confronts her captor. In a tense showdown before the Hamas leader can take her life, reporters come to her rescue, bringing her to safety
