SYNOPSIS:
HOOK: A mentally and physically challenged boy wants desperately to play baseball. His father won't allow it; he knows the reality of competition and the cost to his son's self esteem if others were to make fun of him. A handicapped 11 y/o, TYLER, is invited to play in a little league baseball game in spite of his physical and mental challenges. TWIST: Rather than being bullied or made fun of, Tyler's accepted by the coach and boys on the team. He plays right field, does admirably, and gets to bat clean-up during the final inning. HOOK/TWIST: Tyler comes to bat, and through utter determination, hits the ball in fair territory. The other team encourages and coaxes Tyler around the bases out of compassion and as a simple act of kindness. Tyler hits a soft grounder - a certain out. The pitcher, on a whim, intentionally throws the ball beyond the reach of the first baseman. Tyler reaches safely. The whole team cooperates with their pitcher – encourage Tyler to move on to second. Soon, the crowd, the coaches, even the umpire catch the vision – and help Tyler around the bases, all the way to home plate. Everyone cheers; they lift Tyler on their shoulders give him recognition and applause he's not experienced before. FINAL HOOK/TWIST: It's a moment Tyler and his father will never forget. It changes the son's self esteem and the father's faith in the genuine kindness of others. Tyler dies the following winter, but his memory continues when others tell his story as a hero on the baseball field.
