SYNOPSIS:

Jacob Price is hanging on by his fingernails. It's the summer of 1972 and Jake lives in the idyllic coastal village of Fletcher's Landing. But spectacular scenery can't make up for a dysfunctional family. The youngest, he has an over-protective mother, an often-absent father and older siblings who brutally boss him around. But when it's all too much, Jake can sit down and listen to his eldest brother and protector Richard play his guitar and sing, dreaming of the day he'll be grown up and free of all this craziness.

Jake loses his lifeline when Richard meets and falls in love with Emily, a Nova Scotia youth worker on tour holding summer bible classes at the family church. Jake suddenly finds himself in Emily's class with four teenage girls and a curriculum of religious studies that consists of listening to the Broadway version of Jesus Christ: Superstar. The battle between Jake (desperate not to lose Richard) and Emily rages even he befriends Mary, the shyest girl in the class. Jake coaches her so she can perform at the program's final concert. She knocks it out of the park and by the end of the evening, Jake has a girlfriend. But he's lost a brother.

The confrontation goes to the next level when Richard announces he and Emily are getting married and moving away. Jake discovers the big rush is because Emily's pregnant. The bottom's fallen out of his world. It gets worse when Emily manipulates Richard into forcing Jake to work as a deckhand on their Dad's barge for the rest of the summer to get him out of her hair. And that means no seeing Mary.

But Jake is allowed to bring his best friend Mike with him. As summer flies by, through a series of challenges and with Mike's help, Jake learns how to be more self-sufficient and to survive without Richard -- and maybe get even with Emily. Revenge comes at the wedding, where against Emily's orders, Jake sneaks Mary into the reception hall and dances with her in the center of the floor. Angry at first, Emily, seeing the delight and unabashed love on their faces, lets it go. 'Cos she has a confession to make to everyone...

Jake and Mary wave Richard and Emily goodbye as they drive onto the ferry to the Mainland. Turns out Emily wasn't pregnant after all: she told Richard that to force him to marry her. But they're going to try to make things work. And now, Mary and Jake have their own chance to make things work. Holding hands, they start the long walk home from the ferry terminal. Not that Mary minds. She's just happy to be with Jacob Price, Superstar.
