About Kyla

Kyla (pronounced Kayla - ask her about this lifelong typo) Sylvers is a writer, actress, director, producer and nerd, originally from Chicago. Having just wrapped up her travels where she was a freelance writer, Kyla is ready to return to the world of entertainemnt. She was most recently a staff writer and producer for the WWE (yes, wrestling!). As an independent creative, her award-winning short, THE BLACK BANSHEE -- which she wrote, produced, and co-starred in -- explored the idea of a super-powered Black woman saving those closest to her by intersecting real-world issues with supernatural drama. The project was featured in ESSENCE MAGAZINE, screened at over 50 cinemas, and was in multiple film festivals while the accompanying pilot has placed in ISA FAST TRACK’S TOP 50 FINALIST list and the TABLE READ MY SCREENPLAY TOP 100 list. In addition, her dark comedy-crime pilot, SEX, VLOGS, AND KIDNAPPINGS, which is based on the hit web series of the same name, was recently a quarterfinalist in the BLACK BOY WRITES/BLACK GIRL WRITES MENTORSHIP INITIATIVE. The series explores her passion for Black women having positive sex experiences. The web series of the same name has over 1,000,000 total views and counting. She also directed and starred in the web series, as well.

Her other work includes the sci-fi fantasy pilot, EGATU, a SUNDANCE AND MACRO TV LAB FINALIST. It has also gotten her generals with multiple production companies including Hillman Grad and White Oak Entertainment. It is currently being turned into a book. Her supernatural short, THE NAKED EYE, has been an EMERGING SCREENWRITERS semi-finalist, her fantasy short, EVERGREEN, has been THE FUTURE OF FILM IS FEMALE semi-finalist, and her supernatural short, THE MOMENT BETWEEN, was recently a SCEENCRAFT FILM FUND quarterfinalist. In addition, she was recently a grant recipient for her solo piece, CHAOS AT 26! OR MAYBE IT’S NOT SO BAD. It was produced by Moxie Arts and The Tank theater in NYC in the Fall of 2021.

Next up is her apocalyptic romance feature, ONE LAST TIME, which she just received a fiscal sponsorship for and an invitation to pitch for investors at XL Film Festival. The feature is currently in development. With all of these projects, Kyla is bending genres, taking risks, and making stories her way. She’s excited to keep expanding and subverting the expectation of what black women can do in this business and this world. The nerd in her would be proud.
