A struggling stand up comedian must literally and figuratively kill when a
fanatical heckler takes a comedy club hostage; threatening the lives of patrons, comedians,
and comedy itself.
SYNOPSIS:
Act 1: Sanders Hackman is a struggling stand-up comedian barred from the "Serious Laughs" comedy club due to his inability to land jokes that are too controversial. He harbors one particular joke he’s too afraid to tell. When a spot opens at the club for the return of disgraced late-night comic Lonnie Dinwiddie, Sanders sneaks in, determined to prove he has what it takes.
Act 2: On the same night, Sheckler, a young female anti-comedy heckler, and her gang take the club hostage with threats of explosives. Sanders, along with Lonnie and Gilda (the club owner's daughter), manage to escape unnoticed. Outside, Officer Glanville, a humorless veteran cop, and Pascal, the hipster club owner, mistakenly believe Sanders is behind the hijacking and work to defuse the situation.
Inside, Sheckler manipulates the captive comedians to turn against comedy, sending them to hunt down Lonnie for a public apology. She aims to eradicate offensive jokes and ultimately comedy itself. Sanders must dodge attacks from political satirists, prop comics, Sheckler’s gang, and even Officer Glanville to survive.
When Lonnie is captured, his drug addiction leads him to surrender and apologize for his jokes, fueling Sheckler's mission. However, she isn’t satisfied until Sanders also apologizes.
Act 3: In a final showdown, Sanders negotiates with Sheckler to let him perform a set for the hostage audience, now siding with her. If he succeeds in making them laugh, they can leave; if he fails, he must apologize and take the blame. This diversion allows Officer Glanville and Gilda to search for and defuse the explosives as the building burns.
Sanders fails to make the audience laugh, and Lonnie, now a henchman of Sheckler, is also against him. Sheckler reveals she has the bomb strapped to herself. In a desperate move, Sanders whispers his controversial joke to Lonnie, who repeats it, causing Sheckler to burst into hysterical laughter. The now anti-comedy crowd, incensed by their laughter, turns on Sheckler and Lonnie, tearing them apart.
In the aftermath, the crowd still refuses to leave until someone makes them laugh. Sanders takes the stage and, despite the chaos, performs a set, reigniting the spirit of comedy.
The End.
"Serious Laughs" debates the limits of comedy and whether boundaries should exist, delivering an absurd and wildly entertaining action comedy in the vein of "Tropic Thunder" and "21 Jump Street."
