TWENTY 20

TWENTY 20
By Jayden Cummins

GENRE: Sports, Family
LOGLINE:

When 12-year-old Henry moves to India with his father, his only consolation is that at least he will play cricket. But the road to the game will take him along pathways he never imagined.

SYNOPSIS:

After his mother's death, twelve-year-old Henry reluctantly moves to Kolkata, India, with his father to 'start a new life'. The only consolation is that he will get the chance to play cricket in, arguably, the sport's most passionate supporting nation. Henry has been playing cricket since before he can remember, and was captain of his home team in Sydney, Australia.

Henry's new-found life is a far cry from his humble upbringing in the western suburbs of Sydney. He lives in a 5 Star hotel managed by his father, and attends the exclusive International Grammar School with other expats. When trying out for the school's champion cricket team, Henry meets Spencer, the captain, and the two clash immediately. Thanks to a combination of rotten luck, and a lot of help from Spencer, Henry fails to impress the selectors, and he is overlooked for a spot on the team. He is devastated.

A chance meeting with Arjun, a boy from the streets of Burrabazar, sees Henry invited to play with a group of local kids at The Maidan, a huge park in central Kolkata that houses Eden Gardens, India's largest cricket stadium (and the second largest in the world). Henry and Arjun form an unlikely bond, and Henry is thrilled that he is finally playing cricket again.

A much-publicised tournament hosted by city's IPL team, The Kolkata Knight Riders, calls for entries from local teams, and Spencer gloats about his chances of winning the competition. The prize? Coaching clinics, memberships to Eden Gardens, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Sydney to play an exhibition match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Henry can't believe he won't get a chance to play.

Spurred on by Ellie, an English girl with a wicked fast ball (who failed to make the IGS team because Spencer refuses to play with a girl), Henry and Arjun put a squad together made up of local kids, and a few from IGS that couldn't get a game. They end up with a team of misfits made up of boys and girls from India, Pakistan, England, South Africa, Australia, and even America - although Fred's batting stance is a little different.

The only thing this team needs now, in order to qualify, is a coach. Henry decides to ask Rhadi, a driver from his father's hotel, and a former rising star of Indian cricket who mysteriously stopped playing, at the peak of his career, and disappeared from the cricketing world. Rhadi is reluctant to get involved, but finally agrees, and The Kolkata Kubs are officially entered in the tournament.

Twenty 20 is the ultimate underdog story about a group of children from vastly different backgrounds, bonding over a passion for the game they love. It's not a movie about cricket. It's a movie about friendships, fear, tragedy, and triumph. The story twists and turns in directions you might not expect as the children are challenged both on and off the pitch.
