"A 16-year-old girl from Hull, England takes on the male-boxing world, and battles her way across post-war Europe and Deep South USA, to train alongside Muhammad Ali in 1960s Miami; fighting to legalise women's professional boxing for the world."
SYNOPSIS:
A true-life, coming-of-age story that sees Barbara Buttrick, a tenacious 16-year-old factory-typist from 1940s Hull, England, pull on her boxing gloves and battled her away around the world to make women's boxing a recognised sport.
Barbara boxed in illegal underground matches in her hometown of Hull, the London Mayfair Gym, before joining a travelling circus and boxing her way round post-war Europe. Barbara went onto train alongside Muhammad Ali in Miami 5th Gym. In 1993, Barbara set-up The Women's Boxing Federation and entered the 'Boxing Hall of Fame' in 2020, celebrating her huge achievement in women's professional boxing.
This is more than a story about a female fighter. This is a fight for freedom of individual expression, racial and gender equality, sidecar riding through the political movements of the 50s and 60s, witnessing a recovering post-war Europe first-hand, a new era of sexual liberation and racial segregation. This is a story of having the ‘bite to fight’ and make a significant societal change, then, and still today.
It's 2021. Barbara is 92 years-of-age and living in Miami.
