A young woman in rural America suffers friction with family and friends over her opposing views of their beloved cable news station, and discovers to her delighted surprise that family and friendship can transcend politics.
SYNOPSIS:
April Patnode, 20, is bright as hell, impoverished, and stuck in her rural hometown after high school. She takes a job in a warehouse to help with household expenses and try to save for community college. She and her waitress mother Darlene spar wearily over the competence and motivations of the ‘Looks News’ anchors. April then frictions with an elderly couple, who believe April’s English teacher has made her into a socialist. She argues further about politics and the news with a young couple she had known in high school. At the diner where her mother works, a couple of crusty regulars tease her for her divergent views, and a full-blown argument ensures – shouting and accusations and name-calling, general ugliness, broken glass and tears. April sees nothing but darkness in her upstate town until her next stop at the diner, where all of her so-called adversaries remind her that they are still her people, they know there’s more to life than the daily news.
