When a deeply religious man's wife of thirty years dies in 1970's Ireland he refuses to allow anyone to enter their apartment, including the local Priest and his nemesis the Garda Superintendent. A love story with a twist.

SYNOPSIS:

  1. Our story occurs in the 1970’s, in a quiet rural-urban village in the Republic of Ireland where very little happens. That is until Danny, 60's devoted husband of Phyllis barricades their apartment and refuses anyone entry after she has died. It is clear from the onset that theirs was an idyllic happy marriage, though it appears they remained childless, unusual in Ireland. The first thirty pages sets up the early days of Danny and Phyllis's relationship, illustrating the dichotomy between their love and the dysfunctional relations of the local village folk. This sets a theme for the film, purity versus the tainted, love versus anger and frustration. The stage set all hell breaks loose when negotiations start at Danny's front door. It becomes clear that Danny will not allow the Gardai access to the body, and despite being a devout Catholic, he will not allow the local Priest Father Brennan to read an act of contrition, the doctor enter to examine Phyllis's remains. And unusual for a catholic couple, he wants his wife to have a closed casket, no wake, and to be cremated! The pace escalates as the stakes for Danny, and the village folk increases. We learn that Danny had a run in with the Superintendent who made advances to Phyllis and also has a GBH charge against him for beating his 'friend' Cormac, who groped Phyllis several years before. He was obviously very protective, to the point of being overtly possessive, of his wife. Thing escalate when Danny reveals that he has several containers containing petrol inside the flat with him and he’s ready to set fire to the place if his demands aren't met. Tensions are running extremely high when a furious Danny bursts onto the balcony brandishing a rifle. After insulting members of the crowd and revealing secrets that small town folk would prefer to take to the grave, Danny fires a round off above their heads, and the race against the clock is on as Danny's good friend, soon to retire Garda sergeant O'Reilly locks horns with Danny's arch nemesis, chief Superintendent McCarthy on how to handle Danny. Danny's behaviour has a ripple effect in the community, and everyone in the community is forced to make life changing decisions, and act, for better or for worse. One of these decisions results in ex British army veteran Reggie, 40's, who suffers from PTSD, being shot by Danny. This gives the Superintendent all the grounds he needs to force entry and arrest Danny. Enter hostage negotiators the beautiful Anne, 20's, from Dublin, and African American Michael, recruited to train the Gardai in hostage negotiation. And so the race against the clock is on with O'Reilly, Anne, and Michael attempting to talk Danny down while Superintendent McCarthy is intent on forcing entry and arresting him! The story races towards it's inevitable conclusion, and It is only towards the very end that the reason for Danny's bizarre behaviour is revealed in a kicker of a twist.
