THE CAMP
By Adam Balsam

GENRE: Horror
LOGLINE:

Hoping for reconciliation, a father takes his estranged wife and kids camping, only to encounter an even more dysfunctional backwoods family that wants to tear his family apart. Literally.

SYNOPSIS:

Prologue: Maine, 1983. Camp Kennebec for Boys. Adorable CASSIE, age 7, captures a cricket under a glass but accidentally severs its leg. Her alcoholic father JEB, the camp's caretaker, comforts her by crawling into bed with her, but not in a paternal way.

Present day. BARRY PETERSON, 40, takes his family to visit his beloved Camp Kennebec, site of many idyllic childhood summers. He forbids his kids, COURTNEY,17, and SPENCER, 13, from bringing cellphones, hoping the family will bond. He and estranged wife MELISSA, 38, bicker constantly, always careful to do so out of earshot of the kids. At a rest stop Courtney flirts with a cute TOWNIE and shoplifts some fireworks.

The Petersons find the long-abandoned camp, which is beautiful but creepy, populated by several three-legged dogs and cats, as well as grown-up Cassie, who still lives on the grounds. Cassie threatens the intruders with a shotgun, but brightens when Barry explains he'd been a camper. Cassie pointedly ignores Melissa, and convinces the family to pitch their tents and camp out on the soccer field. That night Barry attempts to get frisky with Melissa in their tent, but she rebuffs his advances and he resorts to masturbation. Meanwhile, in the kids' tent, Courtney awakens to find a toothless mentally-chalenged local, HERMAN (20s), sitting in the tent staring at her. Herman lopes off into the woods, and Barry loads his freaked-out family into their SUV, only to find that the car won't start, and his sole cell phone battery is dead. The family spends a terrifying night locked inside their vehicle.

In the morning, Cassie agrees to take Melissa into town to look for a spare part. Barry and the kids explore the camp, including the riflery and archery range. They check out Cassie's house, where they discover her bathroom has been turned into a makeshift operating room for amputating dog and cat limbs. Realizing they're in the presence of a psycho, they attempt to flee, but Cassie returns without Melissa. The kids don't react to her absence and we realize that MELISSA HAD NEVER BEEN ON THIS TRIP! Barry had been fantasizing that his wife was there and their marriage still intact. A quick montage of past scenes reveals that Melissa had never actually been in the same shot with anyone else, except in Barry's imagination.

Cassie reveals that Herman is actually her son, conceived while being raped by her father Jeb. Mother and son/brother tie the Petersons up in the rec hall and prepare for a night of torture and rape. The Townie attempts a rescue, but Cassie blows him away with her shotgun. She and Herman drag the body off to the woods, along with a hogtied Courtney. They drop the townie into a deep pit, at the bottom of which dwells a still "living" Jeb, whose tongue and fingers had long ago been cut off by a vengeful Cassie. The starving Jeb quickly chows down on the townie, and then perks up as a screaming Courtney is lowered into the pit.

Barry and Spencer manage to untie their bonds and are chased by Cassie and Herman throughout the camp. Spencer dispatches Herman in the archery range, and Barry manages to debilitate Cassie, who is promptly devoured by a pack of her vengeful three-legged dogs. Courtney signals her captivity with the help of her stolen fireworks, and the once-fractured family manages to survive their ordeal.
