THE TWINKLES

THE TWINKLES
By Adam Balsam

GENRE: Music, Comedy
LOGLINE:

In a last-ditch effort to become famous, the leader of a long-haired rock 'n roll bar band convinces his debauched bandmates to reinvent themselves as a kiddie band; but in order to make it in the surprisingly cutthroat world of kiddie entertainment, these stunted rockers must figure out a way to finally grow up.

SYNOPSIS:

Middle-aged bar band RUBICON suffers through yet another lousy battle of the bands gig, losing out to their rival band TUMBLEDOWN. Rubicon has stuck to their rock 'n roll roots, whereas Tumbledown keeps switching musical styles to follow the trends. At a disastrous bar mitzvah gig, Rubicon finally breaks up, undone by the flaws and squabbles that have troubled them for years: Lead singer JIMBO'S relentless womanizing, bassist MARTY'S anal control of the band, lead guitarist CASEY'S drug/alcohol dependence and ponderous songwriting, and drummer LES'S violent streak. For the first time in years, the guys are no longer in a band.

The guys quickly learn that their new-found freedom sucks. Jimbo hits a slump with the ladies now that he's no longer preening nightly on stage. Casey auditions for other bands and realizes he's a decade too old. And Marty's marriage suffers under the demands of supporting his family.

At a birthday party for Marty's five year-old daughter, the electricity goes out and Rubicon grudgingly "reunites" to sing some kiddie songs. The music is a hit, especially with the Milfs, and the guys reluctantly decide to reinvent themselves as a kiddie band and make one last stab at fame and fortune.

Renaming themselves "The Twinkles," the guys are now reduced to performing at libraries and kids' parties, but they have trouble abandoning their allegiance to sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll. Jimbo beds numerous milfs, Casey performs drunk, and Les defiles several kiddie pools. Eventually they are seen at a mall by producer VICKY HOBART, who offers them a chance to audition for an upcoming reality show "America's Next Great Kiddie Band."

The guys cut off their long hair, shave their beards, and don the ridiculous brightly colored costumes their new genre requires. The Twinkles nail the audition, but are dismayed to learn they will be competing against their old nemesis band Tumbledown, who have cravenly reconfigured themselves as a kiddie band named The Aliens.

During the shooting of the reality show, the guys wrestle with their personal demons. Les confronts his sexuality, Jimbo falls in love for the first time ever (with producer Vicky), Marty splits up with his wife, and Casey struggles artistically with his desire to write serious songs for an audience of kindergarteners.

The final episode is a showdown between the Twinkles and the Aliens. The Twinkles manage to stay true to themselves, while revealing the hypocrisy and blatant opportunism of their rivals, and end up resolving their issues and achieving a somewhat different version of fame and fortune than they had originally hoped for.
