TIME CARRIER

TIME CARRIER
By Adam Balsam

GENRE: Sci-fi
LOGLINE:

When a modern nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is transported back to the time of the American Revolution, the captain and crew must wrestle with whether to intervene in the founding of the country.

SYNOPSIS:

Synopsis: South Carolina, 1777. Slaves in the fields witness a miraculous sight: two modern fighter planes soaring through the sky! One crashes, and its black pilot ANTOINE SHERMAN (30) is captured, believed to be a runaway. CUT TO: The Atlantic Ocean in 2022. Beautiful NYT reporter MARTY MORELLI (30s) arrives aboard the aircraft carrier The Gerald R. Ford. She clashes with ADMIRAL ARMSTRONG (50s), who is concerned her reporting will dig too deep. A large Russian Fleet is soon sighted, as well as a growing hurricane. Armstrong maneuvers the Ford away from the Russians, but gets dangerously close to the growing storm. Sucked into the maelstrom, the Ford is whipped around violently, and emerges in calm seas, with no sight of the Russians or the rest of the US fleet. The absence of Internet or GPS leads Marine Col. BO BRADDOCK (40s) to believe it's a Russian ploy.

Old-fashioned radar picks up a small wooden ship, which a flyby reveals to be an 18th century British warship, the Lucy. Marty suggests the Ford may have travelled back in time. Primitive astronomical readings are taken, suggesting she is right. Armstrong orders a recon mission, which results in the crash of Sherman's plane. Armstrong believes time is a river, and that any disturbance in the past will affect the future, whereas Braddock believes they're in a parallel universe and are free to do what they want, including using the Ford's firepower to defeat the Brits. When a Brit soldier is accidentally shot during a flyover, an American sailor suddenly dies. To prove the American was a direct descendant, they conduct a daring mission to retrieve the dead Brit's DNA, proving Armstrong's theory.

Back in Charleston, attraction has grown between the injured Sherman and beautiful plantation owner CARLA JOHNSON (20s), angering her racist father. Also, Governor JOHN RUTLEDGE (40s), one of the Founding Fathers, alarmed by reports of the downed plane, summons GEORGE WASHINGTON (40s) and Aide ALEXANDER HAMILTON (20s) to investigate. The rescue team succeeds in saving Sherman just before he's about to be whipped, but is discovered by Washington. Braddock goes rogue, cuts off contact with the Ford, and reveals that they're from the future. Not entirely convinced, Washington asks to see the Ford, and the Founding Fathers are flown to the ship by chopper and given a grand tour. Washington asks for a demonstration of the Ford's weaponry, and the Lucy is torpedoed, leading to an immediate British surrender. Braddock again attempts to usurp power, but his "superior officer" Washington disarms him and sends him to the brig. When Braddock escapes and commandeers a chopper to fly to the mainland, Washington orders him shot from the sky. Armstrong gives Washington some parting advice about the future, and how the young nation could avoid future problems. The Founding Fathers are returned to the mainland, and the Ford speeds off to rendezvous with a growing storm, hoping it will bring them back to the future.

Hey, Adam Balsam. Great title! I think the logline needs just a little work. Here's a logline suggestion: "When a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is transported back in time to the American Revolution, the captain and crew wrestle with whether to intervene in the founding of the country ___________ (stakes - what happens if they don't intervene in the founding of the country)."
