The Secretary of State, a former Navy SEAL, finds himself unwittingly enmeshed in government covert operation in Venezuela, but when his wife and son are kidnapped by dangerous nationals, he must choose: does he follow the rules of diplomacy, or defy his Commander in Chief and employ his SEAL skills to rescue his family, hidden deep in the Venezuelan forest?
SYNOPSIS:
Joshua Davis, a former Navy SEAL, is appointed Secretary of State at a time when America’s relationship with Venezuela has deteriorated. Venezuelan president Jorge Ortiz, often dismissed as unstable and paranoid, is accusing the United States of attempting to foster civil war in his nation and has enacted a full-blown oil embargo. Speaking for the first time as Secretary of State, Joshua assures the nation that America is not and will not be involved with internal Venezuelan politics.
Joshua soon learns from Vice President John Welling and Chief of Staff Colonel Tom MacMillan, however, that covert ops have been present in Venezuela for years on a top-secret mission to instigate Ortiz’ overthrow. Joshua’s unintentional false statement to the public makes him part of the cover up, deeply challenging his sense of integrity as he is forced to publicly maintain the story in order to protect his nation and the troops.
Ortiz dramatically increases the stakes when he has Joshua’s wife, Annie, and their son, Adam, kidnapped from their home. In less than 24 hours, Annie and Adam are hidden away in an old hunter’s camp deep in the Canaima National Forest, watched over by Alejandro Suarez, a rabid nationalist who quickly develops a strong dislike for Annie, a brilliant physicist and Systems Engineering faculty at the Naval Academy. As Annie and Suarez clash, his brother, Carlos, develops kind feelings for Adam. After finding a way to signal a passing drone, Annie pays dearly and physically for her cleverness, and her situation, and that of her son, grows more desperate.
Meanwhile, Joshua goes to Venezuela, where numerous attempts to negotiate with the kidnappers, Ortiz, and even U.S. President Nicholas Clark fail. With little time left to save his family, he receives information about their possible whereabouts from those covert ops troops. He enlists the aid of his pilot buddy Alan Lamont, and in a midnight parachute drop, Joshua goes into the forest for his family.
Joshua manages to find them, but their escape does not go unnoticed, and Suarez and his men are not far behind. Annie has been injured during her captivity; travelling with her and their eight year old son, Joshua has to improvise his SEAL training to make it through the jungle to the pick-up point with Alan. Several run-ins with Suarez and his thugs along the way cause injury to both sides, but neither can relent.
Meanwhile, Ortiz orders military action on the American Embassy, finally drawing out the covert ops troops. With the political situation deteriorating, President Clark strikes a deal with Ortiz, who calls off the chase. But Suarez will not have it, and after all but his now conflicted brother Carlos abandon him, he pursues Joshua and his family with even greater zeal.
Suarez finally catches up with them at the pick-up point, where he grabs Adam as a hostage. While he negotiates a trade – for the more “useful” Annie, Joshua gets into position to take out Suarez, and in a scene reminiscent of the Lethal Weapon finale, Suarez is killed.
Back in the United States, Joshua returns to Washington renewed in his own moral values, determined to take Venezuela and Ortiz to task, and prepared to face the fallout of his actions and the actions of his own President and nation.
