A successful author celebrating a year of sobriety but still grieving her husband’s death moves out of the city to restart her career but soon finds herself face-to-face with an entity eager to prey on her greatest fears and weaknesses
SYNOPSIS:
HELEN LYNE (35), a successful fantasy author, suffered a great loss when she lost her husband, WILLIAM, to cancer. The grief drove her on a downward spiral full of alcohol – anything to keep the memories of his final days at bay - until it almost killed her. With the help of her friends, Helen entered rehab and started attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. After a year of being sober, she finally decides it is time to restart her career by moving to a cottage for several months in the small city of Bellingham, Washington. Once Helen arrives, she quickly becomes friendly with the city’s police lieutenant, ADAM SOLOMON (50s), and decides to go hiking. During her trek through one of the city’s reserves, she stumbles upon a horrific scene… The carcasses of TORTURED ANIMALS strewn about in a vast clearing within the forest.
She runs away in terror but does not realize something is watching her. After being invited by MARTHA (60s), the local AA sponsor, Helen is tormented by an unseen entity pretending to be her dead husband. The haunting at first is subtle but grows more violent with each encounter. Helen begins questioning her own sanity until she discovers that TINA (23), a member of her AA group, has killed herself under mysterious circumstances. Her research leads her to another disturbing murder-suicide linked to another group member and the symbol she saw in the clearing.
The search for answers finally brings her to the city’s planetarium, where the director tells her about the Perseus constellation, the source of the bright red star that has hung over the city since her arrival. Learning what has been haunting her, Helen fails to save her fellow AA members from the entity’s machinations and decides to leave the city, but not before being confronted in the cottage, where the presence takes William’s form. Despite its psychological torture, Helen resists and flees, only to get in a terrible accident. As she awakens in the hospital, she remembers the mythology surrounding the Demon Star and decides to confront it one last time, where Helen finally learns to accept William’s passing and refuse The Malevolence’s temptations.
