JUNIOR'S FARM

JUNIOR'S FARM
By Alec Cuddeback

GENRE: Sci-fi
LOGLINE:

When a disgraced astronaut wakes from cryonic sleep in 2051 and discovers a mysterious cave that could redeem him, a wise-cracking space alien from 3002 makes him choose:  restore his reputation and live 10 more years, or remain humiliated, but live to 100.

SYNOPSIS:

After the 1990 blastoff of the Shuttle Discovery, astronaut JUNIOR, spacewalks to adjust the Hubble Telescope. A UFO passes in front of him. Junior freaks out. NASA blames him for the telescope's early problems. Disgraced, he's labelled 'The Trouble With Hubble Astronaut' even though it's not his fault. NASA forces him to retire when he writes a book on his UFO encounter and other outer space conspiracy theories.

Junior awakens in 2051, after being cryonically frozen at death. A doctor tells Junior he's had an age regression procedure and will stay in his mid-30s, but could develop a disease and die in ten years.

Junior's daughter, also a cryonics survivor, acts as his guide into the 2051 world. She explains there is some prejudice against cryonics and age regressers, mostly from religious fanatics.

Eager to live a simple life, Junior buys a small piece of land and turns it into a micro-farm.

His neighbors are Lisa, whose 10-year-old son disappeared without a trace a dozen years ago, and Oliver, a Native American, who warns Junior the land he bought is cursed.

Junior develops a romantic relationship with neighbor Lisa and a friendship with Oliver, who starts dating Junior's daughter.

Junior discovers an isolated wooded section of the farm, where animals refuse to enter.

Oliver discourages him, but Junior uncovers the entrance to a mysterious cave.

Junior, Oliver, and the daughter explore. Odd symbols mark the walls. No echo, but a strange sound and smell, and it leads to a steep cliff.

Later, Oliver and Junior use a drone to explore the bottomless cliff. The camera reveals skeletal remains of a child on a ridge. Oliver and Junior assume they are the remains of Lisa's lost son, but decide it's better not to tell her.

Oliver's elderly cat falls off the cliff, and disappears. Oliver holds a grudge, and urges Junior to seal the cave entrance. Later, Junior spots the cat, alive but feral, and it runs off.

Junior investigates and finds the previous owner of the land, an old lady, with her two grandsons.

Instead of providing information, they turn on him, since they persecute and discriminate against other cryonic survivors and also those who have undergone age regression, calling them unholy and wanting to drive them out of the state.

At his medical checkup, the cryonics doctor informs Junior he has the dreaded disease and will die in ten years. Junior keeps this to himself.

Determined to clear his name before he dies, Junior plans to investigate the cave and cliff, and to invite the media to cover his exploration.

Before he can do this, a duo mysteriously appear: A wise-cracking space alien who resembles a Pakistani and his adopted human teenage son.

The alien claims he's also a time traveler from the year 3002 and tries to convince Junior with otherworldly demonstrations. Junior doesn't believe him and insists the alien is just a talented magician.

The alien and his son tag along with Junior and meet the daughter at a local bar. When the alien sings a song promoting atheism, she storms out.

The old lady and her grandsons show up and attack them as they leave the bar, but the alien uses telekinetic powers to defeat them.

Back at Junior's farm, the eccentric alien and his son manage to offend neighbor Lisa with barbaric eating habits and sexual innuendos.

Once he convinces Junior he's from another planet, the alien attempts to persuade Junior not to explore the cave. He claims it will cause the end of the earth by 3002.

After the alien and the religious Junior debate the existance of God, Junior doesn't trust him and suspects the alien's real appearance resembles a devil. The alien assures him he can't directly lie to an earthling, but Junior remains skeptical of his clownish behavior, and questions his motives.

Finally, the alien promises to cure Junior's fatal disease if he abandons the cave experiment and its media coverage. Torn between disbelief, a long life, or years of constantly being known as 'The Trouble With Hubble Astronaut', Junior promises to give the alien an answer by morning.

The next day, Junior knocks on Lisa's door and ushers in Lisa's long-lost son, missing for over a decade, but still ten-years-old. Overcome with joy and disbelief, Lisa asks Junior how he did it. Junior answers, "I made a trade." Junior leaves, to allow mother and son to be reacquainted.

Junior goes to Oliver's house and delivers a basket, with a kitten inside, to replace Oliver's lost cat. He learns Oliver and Junior's daughter are engaged.

Later, a content Junior closes the cave entrance and plants new trees and shrubs to cover it up. He repeats to himself, "I have ten good years left."

He gets a message from the departed alien, who thanks him for abandoning the cave idea and supposedly saving the earth.

The alien tells Junior that he admires his honor and self-sacrifice, so he also left an antidote for his disease. Then, he shows Junior his true appearance. Junior is shocked when he sees a still photo of the alien. With long hair, wings, and a halo. The archetypal representation of an angel.
