SYNOPSIS:
Clara Tuffney, a college Senior, moves to the quiet seaside town of Breach Point to complete her internship at an environmental engineering firm. Living with her ailing Aunt Maureen, she learns of Breach Point Castle, a haunted attraction that made the town famous twenty-five years earlier, before a mysterious fire destroyed it, injuring a firefighter and killing Eric, a young boy who worked at the castle. While visiting the former location of the castle pier, Clara meets Nicholas, a high school student whose uncle Kevin worked at the castle during its prime. Nicholas introduces Clara to Kevin and his friends, also former employees of Breach Point Castle, as they prepare for their annual reunion festival. They are wary of Clara's burgeoning interest in them and their past. During the reunion, Clara learns from Nicholas's teenage friends that Eric, the boy killed in the fire, was rumored to have had supernatural powers, and the castle fire that took his life may not have been accidental. Some of the town's residents believe Eric still exists as a malevolent spirit - a spirit which may be present in the former castle employees. Kevin overhears their discussion and angrily dismisses the story as "local folklore". Clara begins investigating the Breach Point Castle fire using her employer's records of the pier's demolition. After uncovering inconsistencies with the events surrounding the fire, and running into some of the other former castle employees while doing research at the library, she returns home from an art festival with Nicholas and discovers her Aunt Maureen unconscious on the floor. Aunt Maureen is hospitalized, and when Clara visits the near-empty hospital after hours, she witnesses three hooded figures performing a ritual over Aunt Maureen's body - all engulfed in an erie, pulsing light. Clara and Nicholas are pursued by the hooded figures, but manage to escape. When Clara visits Aunt Maureen the next day, she is awake and healthy, but behaving strangely and claiming not to remember the incident. A doctor reveals to Clara that the heart condition Aunt Maureen had been suffering from is no longer present in her body, leaving no evidence of her ever having been ill. With Nicholas's assistance, Clara further investigates the mystery of the fire, though Nicholas resists the idea that his Uncle Kevin and the other former employees are involved in any kind of cover-up. They track down a local reporter who once wrote about the mystery of the fire, but he is unwilling to discuss his former concerns, warning them to halt their search. Clara and Nicholas then locate the reclusive firefighter injured in the castle blaze and are shocked to discover that the burns that supposedly cover his body do not exist at all. In a mentally unbalanced state, the firefighter gives them more reason to believe Eric's spirit may still linger in the town and the former castle employees. Clara begins to wonder if a small island off the shore of Breach Point, which now serves as a junkyard filled with the remnants of the castle, may hold the key to the mystery. She and Nicholas devise a plan to shut down the island's generators, but before the plan can be enacted, she receives a written threat and fears that someone has broken into her Aunt Maureen's house. Clara spends the night with Nicholas and his family, but in the morning is confronted with Kevin, who instructs her to leave Breach Point immediately. Clara prepares to leave, but decides against it, fearing that Aunt Maureen may suffer at Kevin's hands. She finds Nicholas on the shore at night and they await the power outage on the small island. Once the lights blink out, they notice an organic glow remains within the island. Clara and Nicholas take a rowboat toward the island, but are pursued by Kevin and his friends in a power boat. As they near the island's entry cove, Clara is thrown overboard. Nicholas jumps into the water to save her, but is impaled by a submerged fence post. Kevin and the other former Breach Point Castle employees pull Nicholas free of the fence post and lay his bleeding body on the beach. One of the friends runs to the glow at the center of the island, and returns with Eric, surrounded by fireflies, who lays his hands upon Nicholas and heals him. It is revealed that the Breach Point Castle fire was indeed a cover up - one created by the castle's owner and employees. Eric had been covertly healing the sick and injured of Breach Point, but rumors of his powers were spreading, so the fire was created to fool the townspeople into believing that he was dead. For the past twenty-five years, Kevin and his friends have been using his healing ability to quietly heal residents of Breach Point and the surrounding area - including Aunt Maureen. Clara and Nicholas, now on the inside of this secret, are asked to help with Eric and his efforts to heal those who need his supernatural assistance. They agree.
[SCENE SAMPLE] Clara Tuffney is a college senior who's just arrived in the quiet seaside town of Breach Point to work a semester-long Environmental Engineering internship. She moves in with her Aunt Maureen and, in exploring the area, learns of a haunted attraction – Breach Point Castle – that made the town famous a quarter century ago. Clara heads to the beach in search of the castle's remains... ==================== EXT. PILINGS - DAY Clara walks out toward a group of wooden pilings poking out from the sand. Behind her, a SHADOWED FIGURE stands, previously hidden by a patch of tall weeds. Clara aims her camera at the image of the ruined pier. SHADOWED FIGURE (O.S.) Looking for the castle? Clara turns, surprised. Her camera falls into the sand. She sees the figure clearly. NICHOLAS, in the throes of a half-hearted attempt at teenage punkness, looks harmless despite his purple-tipped hair. He carries a sketchbook. NICHOLAS Sorry - I wasn’t trying to scare you. CLARA It's okay, really. I just didn't see you sitting there. She notices Nicholas’s sketchbook. CLARA I’m Clara. And yes, I was looking for the castle, actually. NICHOLAS Nicholas. And sorry, but you’re like, twenty-five years too late. CLARA I knew I should have left earlier. Nicholas laughs with restraint. He picks up the camera, shakes off the sand, and hands it back to Clara. CLARA So am I correct in assuming you’re an artist? NICHOLAS Sketchbook tipped you off, huh? CLARA Dead giveaway. NICHOLAS Actually if you want to see Breach Point Castle, this is about as close as you’ll ever get. Nicholas opens the photo album and hands it to Clara. She flips through pages with taped-down Polaroids and newspaper clippings of the haunted attraction and its ghoulish cast members in and out of costume. NICHOLAS Biggest haunted attraction in the country, back before I was born. CLARA I believe it. It looks like a fun place to spend a warm summer night. Clara flips a page and comes across an elegant pen and ink drawing of the castle. CLARA This is yours? Nicholas nods, shyly. NICHOLAS Figured I looked at enough photos of that place that I had to give it a shot. CLARA It’s lovely, really. I’m in school for Environmental Engineering, so I’ve taken quite a few art classes, but I’m terrible at crosshatching. Do you have any secrets? NICHOLAS Yeah - don’t draw castles. They’re way too complicated. Clara chuckles. CLARA And I thought you were going to educate me about that place. Nicholas looks off thoughtfully. NICHOLAS You know what? If you’re really interested in it... are you hungry? ==================== They head to a nearby restaurant where Clara is introduced to Nicholas' Uncle Kevin and a group of his friends – all former employees of Breach Point Castle. Clara begins to learn more about the attraction's history, but when she digs up information about the mysterious fire that destroyed the castle – and a boy who supposedly died in the fire – Kevin and his friends warn her that some things are better left buried.
