SYNOPSIS:

Gates of Midnight is a Limited Series Written by Deborah Daughetee GATES OF MIDNIGHT is a supernatural thriller pitting Raven, a combat medic recently returned from Afghanistan and suffering from PTSD, against gods and monsters from world mythology. THE WORLD No matter where you live on this planet, someone within 200 miles of your home has reported a confrontation with a frightening apparition or inexplicable monster. From as far back as we have written records, there have been reports of people and animals being killed, terrorized, or influenced by beings that appear and disappear like magic. This limited series explores the entities behind these monsters of myth and legend and delves into the influences they exert upon our world. THE GATES The gates are portals that entities use to enter our world. They are ripped open in places where humans have perpetuated violence that resulted in mass murder. The Gate in New York city was ripped open by 9/11, and while most gates close naturally after a time, this Gate is persistent. THE SERIES The three graphic novels of Gates of Midnight are the IP for the first series. It is a serialized drama focusing on the story of Raven, her struggle with PTSD, and culminating with confronting the ultimate god and closing the 9/11 gate. While there will be a monster each week, the overall arch will explore the duality of nature, i.e., the monsters are not always the bad guys, and Raven has to deal with her PTSD and knee-jerk "kill first, ask questions later" reactions. It explores themes like homelessness, bigotry, and vigilantism, just to name a few. Our monsters come straight out of world mythology: The Ifrit, a fire demon who brings Raven to her knees and almost destroys her partner's family and herself. The Jorgumo, a spider-woman whose song, like a siren, brings men to her. Not just any man, but men who abuse women and who, after answering the siren's call, end up cocooned for future consumption. The hydra attacks a fundraiser and infects Alex, the gatekeeper (who is also a dragon) so that he turns on Raven. And Bub, the Hellhound who is devoted to Raven. As Raven uncovers the secrets of those close to her, she becomes able to face her secrets and start to recover from the trauma she brought with her from Afghanistan, growing strong enough to meet the true villain of the series, Malsumis. In the final episodes, creatures who have hidden in our world gather for the final war with Malsumis, the Wolf-headed Algonquian god who is intent on keeping the Gate open permanently and releasing his minions for the destruction of humankind. This is the monster who killed her father, the monster who sent the Ifrit, and the one who has manipulated events to lead to what will be a war in the middle of New York City. Raven can't see any more of her friends or family die. She's seen war and knows the costs. She challenges Malsumis to a duel… Warrior of the Gate against God. He accepts, and a force field is placed around the two to prevent interference. It looks like Malsumis will easily win, but Raven's mother priestess uses her power to raise the dead, and Eddy, Raven's father, joins her inside the force field. Other warriors of gates are also able to participate. After all, there have been many acts of violence over time and many warriors to protect the resulting gates. Malsumis is defeated. The Gate finally closes. The creatures either go through to the other side or disappear as if never there. Raven decides to get out of New York and see the country that she has defended here and abroad. Bub is staying with her, even though he's a hell hound, he, like Raven, is learning not to act rashly. Alex decides to join them. The characters that populate Raven's world span from Alex, her partner in fighting monsters and love interest, to Maria, her rich mother who happens to be a priestess to a Hoodoo Loa. From the homeless vet Slim, who "has her back," to Rain, the transgender teen whose parents threw her out. From Bub, her female Hellhound who she gets as a puppy and who if fiercely loyal to her, to Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess who masquerades as the curator of the Egyptian Museum and whose motives are entirely suspect. FUTURE SEASONS Like American Horror Story, Gates of Midnight is an anthology series. Future seasons can explore different gates all over the world. We can develop new characters with new faults and bring in various gods and monsters, illuminating different issues with which our society is dealing. Or we can follow Raven and Alex to a different place and different Gate each season as they interact with other cultures and other Warriors of the Gate. THE GRAPHIC NOVELS Volume 1 of the Gates of Midnight is the pilot script. Volume 2 deals with secrets, monsters, and Raven's PTSD. Each of the four issues contained therein adapts to an episode. Volume 3 is currently being written, includes four issues, and ends as described above.
