After his uncle passes away, a college grad returns to his Georgia hometown to come to terms with his death and the dysfunction of his family.
SYNOPSIS:
TIM ROCHESTER is a Georgia Tech grad student. He's well-to-do, always on the run, always on the job. The perfect student. The only thing that could hold him back is his well intentioned, yet dysfunctional family. He doesn't hate them, but at the same time, he enjoys the time he spends away from them at GT. One day, Tim gets a phone call from his father BURT, an all too honest retired rancher. Burt tells Timothy that his uncle Albert, a reclusive hermit in Albany, Georgia, has passed away. Understandably upset, Timothy decides to head back to Albany for the funeral. Upon arriving home, Timothy gets reintroduced to the dysfunction of his family: a socially awkward divorcee brother, BENNY, that wastes away on his parents' couch; the emotionally sporadic on-and-off again ex-wife, JAMIE, that returns to the funeral and tries to rekindle the old flame; a WASPy aunt, MEG, that tries to take reigns of any situation; and at the heart of it all, Uncle Albert, whose death has jaded the family's memory of his drunken, morally ambiguous past. All except for skeptical Tim. Throughout the next three days, Tim has to serve as the mediator between not only Benny and Jamie's post-marital woes and his father's constant berating of himself and everyone around him, but everyone's constant appraisal of deceased Albert. He's been tight lipped about everyone's problems for far too long. It all culminates in the post-funeral wake. Bert, having given the eulogy of his brother, has sunken in a sudden depression over the inevitability of his own death. Benny and Jamie announce they are getting remarried, despite berating each other all weekend. Meg attempts make the evening self congratulatory while still putting Albert on a pedestal. Tim can't take it anymore and unleashes a verbal whiplash on everyone and anyone (including Uncle Albert), namedropping everyone's shortcomings and storming out to the local bar to soak his worries away. While Tim gets buzzed at the bar, the family comes to terms with some of their issues. Benny and Jamie actually sit down and discuss their marriage rationally, as Meg and Bert tries their best to patch up their relationship (to limited success). Suddenly, Bert gets a call from a drunken Timothy; he needs a ride home because he car was destroyed while he was inside. A few minutes later, Bert comes to pick up Timothy in front of the bar. Timothy asks why everyone is being polite about Albert despite his questionable past. Bert simply replies, “Because he's family.”
