Is it just me, or does directing frustrate you?
I agree with David, let the story guide you. I always go back to story when I get lost. What's being said right now? How can I pull that from my actor? How can I pull that from my DP?

Expand commentI think your script, the story, will/should tell everybody what to do. As the director you should know the complete script by heart - or at least prepare for each shooting day you know by heart what will be shot. Further, there wouldn't be so many problems if you have a proper table read together before the shooting begins. If necessary sit down with each actor one to one and go through their part. It is your responsibility that they know exactly what you expect them to do. You are the boss, the one who interprets the script - not the actor. The actors are like musicians in an orchestra who play the symphony in the way the conductor tells them. Not the other way round.
A very interesting thread btw.

My name is Justin Miller, I'm a Director in Atlanta, GA that has a passion, not only for the medium, but also for creating content that inspires positive (progressive) social change. I signed up a long time ago, but recently rediscovered Stage 32 thanks to a few Indie Film Hustle Podcasts.
I have extensive experience working as crew, having worked in various aspects of this crazy industry since the age of 14, both on and off-set.
I'm currently spending my time developing a few short form projects for production later in the year and searching out writers that have something to say, all while crewing commercials on the side.
I look forward to engaging with the community, and am shamelessly including a link to my reel below!
Thanks for taking the time to read!

Thanks Izzibella! That is a compilation of the work I did in 2016.
Welcome!
No thanks Chad

Also wanted to let you know, as a creative that isn't great interpersonally, I appreciate the insights you gave and look forward to engaging in this community with that knowledge!
Getting ready for a 2 day sizzle reel shoot in Arizona and curious what are the crew top wish list on set to help make their job enjoyable and doable in a long day? How do I help you to get the best performance from you? Thanks in advance for any insight you havje!
If exterior, ensure a place to rest, mingle in the shade. Going to be 80°+ this week!
Great suggestions! Thank you. I agree on the food has got to be great! Oy ...Arizona is getting hot already!

Honestly, I'd love feedback as well as some insights into what others do daily, but I'd really love for this gives some folks some ideas of what they can integrate into their daily routine.
First and foremost, I should mention that I am a freelancer, so this schedule is someone that does have days off.
My first big revelation was that I wanted to Direct for a living, not that I wanted to be a Director, not that I thought it'd be cool to Direct. I want to Direct content for a living. What this revelation told me is that I MUST spend at least 8 hours/day focusing on moving towards the goal of directing for a living.
As a freelance crew member, I used to spend days which I wasn't on-set for 12+ hours, trying to find a way to fill my day. Going to the gym, Watching TV, sometimes being productive. By forcing myself to focus on my filmmaking career for at least 8 hours I've seen a HUGE uptick in my productivity and I feel like I am actively on my way to creating a career for myself doing what I want to do for a living.
I wonder if anyone here knows if there is a person or entity in this field who takes a synopsis to different producers and gets them sold. I ask because I have a few very good ideas for movies but I would love to sell the concept before i spend time writing the full script.
We've all been there! Slavica, show your determination, confidence, and focus, by writing the first draft of the screenplay with the one idea closest to your heart, there are dedicated people here that can help you get started... Best of luck!
I am myself looking for interesting concepts that can be set/adapted to India. Do you feel we can take this forward?
Way to go, Shahnawaz & Slavica - hope something comes out of it!
I want to write and film my own feature length movie, but I am lacking funds for more equipment because let's face it, you can't make a feature length film with one camera. How did you get your start and how much did you spend on your first film?
Do it, by any means necessary. I think Issa Rae is a perfect example of what you don't need in order to enjoy success. Tell strong relatable stories and everything will follow.
Wow. I needed this myself. Thanks, Lachele, for the question and all others for the encouragement.
I shot my first film over two different weekends b/c checking out equipment on Friday and returning it Monday only counts for one day with rental houses. It cost me $14,500 but returned well over $100,000 b/c a distributor loved it and pushed it.

Expand commentDoug - Being happy with where you live is very very important. People are amazingly adaptable in where they choose to live and why. I’ve shot on six continents, and regardless of where I go, I try to remember that there is something about the place that the people there love. I try to respect what they see and feel even though I may never fully understand it. I chose to move to Los Angeles. The industry side of being here has perks many do not think of, like rarely a week goes by without me being in a seminar, taking some course, or teaching one, to further my knowledge and skills. The opportunity to learn at the level I wish is just not possible in most other places. On those occasions when I shoot here it is always nicer to be home after a day on a set instead of going back to a hotel.
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble staffing shoots. I’m sure you have thought about why that is happening. Good luck on the next project.
Save your money and invest in a Sure Thing, Doug. ;)
Make your Oregon Project later.
Andrew - Yes I have a pretty good understanding about why it's not happening here - I live in a town where young people go to retire.
