A struggling suburban family finds a massive rough
diamond in their backyard, but instead of showering them with
riches, it brings total chaos -- and a question whether the
diamond is even theirs.
SYNOPSIS:
What would you do if you're the Ruff family and your ten year old kids found what looked like a giant, uncut diamond in your suburban back yard?
First, make sure it's a diamond. A visit to New York's diamond district should do that. Unless you go into the wrong store operated by unscrupulous Russian diamond dealers. With help, and after a mad chase through the streets of the city, you are able to foil their first effort to steal it and confirm it is a rare blue diamond, worth millions.
Surely, storing it in a bank's safe deposit box will be enough to protect it. But not when a tabloid TV reporter breaks the story and reveals your home address. So back come the Russians, this time breaking into your house. But the family's defense system does the trick and the Russians are finally out of their lives. Whew, what a relief.
Not so fast. Now your neighbors want to see how close to their yards the diamond was found. And then the mob of the curious and flaky appear at your doorstep.
That diamond has to be cut and fast. But be careful; one mistake and the value plummets. So an expert diamond cutter flies in from Holland and...it's done. We're rich.
Well, if the Ruffs are rich, than we will be too, think the neighbors. All we have to do is excavate our yard. So what if it causes some damage to the Ruff's house, we'll all be rolling in dough. All hell breaks loose in Piscataway, New Jersey. People ripping up their yards, tearing apart the streets, bringing down the cell towers.
But celebration time is short-lived. The family dog remains in the back yard, on the diamond crazy neighbor's side of the house. He could be crushed. The kids have to get back home to rescue him. The parents will understand. Unfortunately, all the parents care about is that their ticket to a life of leisure has been snatched away. The diamond is not theirs; it was stolen from an African mining operation decades before finding it's way into their yard.
We'll just have to break the bad news to the kids and the neighbors. Only we can't because there's no way to reach them with cell service out and the police/firemen refusing to intervene in the frenzy of destruction. So the race is on, the kids to save their dog, the parents to save their house.
With the help of a sketchy looking band of motorcyclists, the kids save the day, the house -- and the dog. And, even without millions from the diamond, the Ruffs all are rewarded in their own way.
