This month, I want to encourage you to explore an abundance mindset. It could significantly change your work and your approach to it.
Many times, we believe we view the world from a "glass half-full" perspective when, in fact, we might unconsciously see it as half-empty—a scarcity mindset. This mindset can be shaped by lifelong conditioning, negative biases, upbringing, or the influence of friends, family, and society. Whether you realize it or not, a “glass half-empty” mindset impacts your creativity. On the optimistic side, this could be a motivator that kicks your ass into getting busy creating. However, I think more often than not, it inhibits, stifles, and causes you to take smaller swings.
This may be you…
First of all, you are not alone. Secondly, being consciously aware of this mindset allows you to actively do something to shift it. It might be just an aspect of your life where you feel lack instead of abundance, not your whole life. Shifting this mindset opens you up to a world of possibilities. For instance, my book, Take a Shot at Happiness: How to Write, Direct & Produce the Life You Want, just made it on the “recommended” list for The U.S. Review of Books! You never know what may be ahead of you.
To help you, I am sharing fifteen quotes and tips to inspire you to make the shift.
Practice gratitude daily by focusing on the creative opportunities you have rather than what you lack. Appreciate the projects you are working on and the progress you have made – this will help cultivate an abundance mindset.
Embrace the non-material aspects of your creative life, such as the joy of storytelling, the connections with peers, and the passion for your craft, recognizing your value and contribution in a career that is fulfilling.
Celebrate and appreciate each completed script, successful pitch, or positive feedback to attract more positivity and creative opportunities.
Realize your unique voice and potential. Yes, prize yourself. Embrace the idea that your stories and perspectives are valuable and insightful and make a significant impact.
Pursue your creative dreams with determination and resilience. Do not let rejection or setbacks stop you from reaching your goals. Do not let people define your value. You are the writer, director, and producer of your life.
Take charge of your creative journey and decisions. Be clear on your beliefs and values. Shape your career by aligning your projects and efforts with your aspirations.
Practice kindness and generosity in your creative community. Help others with their projects, and you will find support and opportunities coming back to you. What goes around, comes around. Remember the boomerang effect.
Take bold action toward your dreams to overcome self-doubt and fear of failure. Every experience, whether success or failure, is a step forward. How do you think the first films were made? Someone with a determined vision took the initiative to make it happen. Now look, there is a whole film, TV, and streaming industry. So, focus on your strengths, what you can control, and your creative endeavors.
Value the emotional connections and experiences your stories create. These intangible elements are what truly resonate with audiences. You can have all the great effects, stunning cinematography, dazzling editing, and epic music. It all falls flat if you do not create an emotional reaction with your audience through good foundational storytelling. People need to feel your words and your characters’ plight or immense joy.
Understand that creative abundance is not solely about financial success or awards. While those are all wonderful to have, no doubt. It is about the richness of your storytelling, the relationships you build, and the growth you experience.
Dare to take creative risks and explore new genres, themes, or styles. Bold choices often lead to the most rewarding opportunities. T-a-k-e B-i-g S-w-i-n-g-s.
Embrace both your creative successes and failures as part of your journey toward growth and achievement. Every script written and every project produced is a step toward mastering your craft.
Put in the extra effort to polish your scripts, deepen your characters, and refine your plots. This dedication turns ordinary stories into extraordinary ones. Some of the best writing advice I ever received was from a sixteen-time NY Times bestselling author. He said, “Be ruthless with your words and read everything out loud. I would add: proofread, proofread, proofread. No matter how many times I do this, I still miss things.
Align your thoughts, beliefs, and actions with the creative success you desire. Be proactive, positive, and persistent in your creative endeavors. Revisit number six here.
Expand your mindset and embrace unlimited possibilities to overcome limitations and challenges in your creative process. Think well outside the box; in fact, blow that damn box apart to find new solutions and ideas.
Shifting from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset is a powerful way to enrich your creative life. By embracing these quotes and tips, you can cultivate a mindset that sees opportunities, fosters creativity, and leads to an even more fulfilling and rewarding career.
